having a nightmare

I'm new to all this - so here goes :
got an ipaq 2210 with tt3 and a globalsat br305 reciever and can I get it to work?

Ipaq is mounted in a sillver shield powered holder(?). The reciever came with some software but no real instructions for use. I figured from the info I have found that all that was required was to select NMEA 0183v2 on serial cable com1 and all would be ok. Each time I do this the green led on the mount turns red. I have not been able to even power up the reciever yet !
What on earth am I doing wrong. Off to Cornwall with the kids soon so would appreciate some help
