I am new to GPS and PDA's so I could really do with some help, I am looking at the BT GPS receivers but after reading a few posts on here they don't seem to be reliable but I need it to be portable so whats the solution?

I also want a good PDA so I was looking at this Dell which gets a very good write up, can anybody advise me if this is a good package.

Many thanks

James - I too am relatively new to GPS. I bought a Ipaq1940 and BT TomTom3 package. I have had no real trouble with TT BT GPS which seems to perform very well. I did experience some problems but they were largely of my own making.
I had a problem with running MemoryMap along with TT but that was sorted by loading an older TT GPS. I then made the mistake of NOT backing up my full system and letting the Ipaq run completely flat. I then had to restart the whole painful loading process again.
My most serious whinge is the usual long time TT takes to locate (often 10-15 minute) - one can go quite a long way wrong in 15minutes!
An unexplained thing is that the MemoryMap always locates almost instantly - so the delay is presumably a TT3 failling rather than the BT GPS.

First of all, I wouldn't go for the Dell. There have been a number of reports about flakey Bluetooth on the X30's and also compatbility problems with other GPS Cards. I would stick with something like a HP iPAQ 2210 or similar. You will pay a little more but you get what you pay for (quality).

Regards Bluetooth GPS's, The Emtac/Socket BT GPS and Holux GR-230 are good reliable GPS's. The TomTom BT GPS has been known to just break after about 12 months of use (or before) due to charging issues, so from a personal stand point I would avoid that one.

Thanks for the reply

I was surprised about the flaky BT on the Dell as I know someone with this unit and he hasn't had any problems with it.

After looking at the 2210 the spec doesn't seem that good for the price, its only 312mhz apposed to 624mhz of the X30 and it doesn't have WiFi which is another option I will need.

I recently read a review of the X30 and it seemed very good which is why I was looking at it, in fact it beat the 5550 iPAQ on the bench and it costs much less.

Here is the review

James, I too am totally new in these forums and am still waiting for my first GPS.. a Bluetooth Navman with SmartST to go with my existing Dell X3i. So I can't comment on GPS.

I can comment on my experience with Dell. My first Axim X3 I purchased a year ago as a present for my wife. I never really considered Dell to be a "quality" brand, but after examining the X3 and seeing the torture my wife gave it (which it survived)... I just had to have one. I purchased the second, an Axim X3i with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (one of, if not the first to offer these built-in options). All I can say is both of these units have performed faultlessly, neither one has required so much as a 'reset'. The screen is good enouh to be clear and visible in the Spanish sun, the bluetooth works without a hint of a problem with my BT cell phone (I'm expecting to report the same with the BT GPS). Both units have been accidently dropped and have not suffered, nor show, any ill effects.

Okay, this is not the X30, but is in the same range and in all honesty Dell have surprised me with quality, function and design. The only 'minor' niggle I have found is the volume level on the small in-built speaker, However when I plug earphones into the Axim it is plenty loud and good enough for me to listen to the occassional MP3.

I've noticed some very good deals around for combined PDA/GPS packages.. incl some good Dell options.

Just my 2c and HO.

Ken

Be aware that Dave was talking about the iPAQ h2210, which is now end of life and almost unavailable.

The h2210 is being replaced by the iPAQ hx2000 series, which consists of three models. The most expensive will be the hx2750. I believe the middle spec hx2410 is well worth a look - compared to the h2210 it has Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition, a larger iPAQ File Store, a faster processor (520MHz) and built-in Wi-Fi.

The cheapest hx2110 is not that wonderfully featured - it has a smaller battery than the other hx2000 models (the hx2110 optional extended battery is the same capacity as the standard battery on the other two models) and a 312MHz processor, but it is still a step up from HP's budget iPAQ rz1710 - especially in having 64MB of RAM. I wouldn't want less than 64MB of RAM in a Pocket PC I was going to use seriously; I find 64MB enough if there's a large iPAQ File Store or similar - which is just as well, as there's no 128MB version of the hx4700 other than by paying to have 128MB of RAM installed by a third party.

At the moment the hx2000 iPAQs are new, not that widely available and when you can get them, they're rather expensive still. I suspect the hx2410 will be the pick of the three for many applications - but that depends on pricing. The hx2750 looks decidedly expensive from the figures I've seen; unless you have to have 128MB of RAM, I wouldn't bother.
