Hi
I'm new to all this and confused

Which is better - Navman 3000 or 1000?

Do they need an IPAQ to work?
Will they work with a Palm M505?

What comes in the box?

I have an offer of both, 1000 more expensive...

Can't see what exactly I would be getting.
have found an internet review but that was not clear

please help

Ian

There is information on this site.

http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/menu_gpshardware2.php

I'm glad you are aware that these are discontinued products. They will have maps a few years old and will not be as sensitive as current products.

Would it be worth £80

Can the software be upgraded?

The software can be upgraded.

As to whether the kit is worth £80. If you think you would want to upgrade the software/maps then I would think not. After all, you can buy an up-to-date wired or sleeve package for about £125-£150, or a Bluetooth one for about £175-£200. £80 plus a software upgrade would cost you more than this.

Ian,

I've just spotted your reference to a Palm. The 3000 won't work with it as it is an Ipaq Sleeve, I don't know about the 1000.

The 1000 is a CF device and the 39xx if i am correct has a SD slot so they are not compatible.

The 3000 is a sleeve and provides you with a CF slot so it would be Ok for your 39xx.

However this old hardware and software has no voice guidance so as kartracer said, to upgrade the maps alone will cost in the region of £79

So far that would be £180 spent.

Add to this OS maps for walking such as Memory Map or Anquet at £40 per area (which you will have to add on any system for off road pursuits) and you are now on £220

It may be wise to look at the latest GPS products first for price comparisons before making a final desicion.
