Hi.

I want to hardwire a tomtom carkit (for the PDA not the BT GPS unit). Happy with what needs to be done re connecting to the vehicles wiring loom but I'm having trouble finding a supplier for the connection into the mount. I really want a connector where the cable comes out of the jack at 90 degrees to the plug - hope that makes sense. Maplin have them as a straight connector but not the 90 degree type.

Want to keep as neat as possible and don't really want to cut the one off of the cigar lighter cable that came with the kit.

Anyone able to help?

remember you still need the 12V > 5V converter. so why don't you install a hidden cigarette lighter socket in the dash and then just use your existing power supply?

The kits run at 12/24v - the step down is done in the cradle, as far as I can tell, not in the plug itself, so shouldn't need to worry about the 5v thing. You might be able to just snip the cigarette adapter bit off of the existing cable and wire it in.

I think TomTom used to do a hardwire cable. Drop them a line and ask them.

Failing all that - try RS.

You're right the step down is done in the cradle as power coming out of cigar lighter cable is 12v.

Ideally want to keep the supplied cable in one piece so that I can use in a different vehicle.

Tomtom say they have stopped making the hardwire cable and don't have any in stock.

Same as the BT cradle - if the Navigator 3 and BT receiver wasn't so new to the market I would think they bringing to end of life.

Oh well the search goes on.

I'd double check the size if I were you. Most connectors to Tomtom units (and a lot of other units also), are a 1.7mm size.

I believe it's measured on the size of the pin that goes into the connector and not the external diameter.

1.7mm connectors are rather more difficult to get hold of.

sorry to hijack the thread, i could also do with some hard wiring advise.
I've ordered a brodit hard wired mount and will run this off power at the front of the car, straight forwrd. However i also need to power a bluetooth reciever and a re radiating ariel in the boot area. I will have a distibution block for a stereo amplifier in the boot powered directly off the car battery can i power the two from this safely ?
