HELP! Beginner and haicom 303mmf,Ipaq PDA and memory map??

I have just bought the haicom 303MMf GPS and slipper and have two problems. The instructions are abysmal, what software do I have to install if any?? I have managed to get GPS Info onto the PDA, but is anything else needed...drivers etc???

The Haicom GPS works in the CF slot, its own software (GPS info) giving position etc. and it seems to default to Com 7 CF_CARD_GENERIC. and has a baud rate of 4800.

In addition, I can't even get the PDA to find the GPS when using the blue
tooth slipper. The PDA finds and connects to the slipper OK but just won't link
to the GPS through the haicom software, desipte trying several COM ports.

My mapping software - memory map - won't link to the GPS. I have clicked GPS - setup and set the settings for
Manufacture = Sirf, Port = COM 7 CF_CARD_GENERIC_DD and Baud = 4800. No joy. I have
also tried setting Manufacturer to NMEA still no luck.

When you click OK about 2 sec later the error message pops up "GPS: Can't
open COM port" retry/cancel. If I retry the the same happens again.

I would be grateful for any ideas you might have to solve this problem

Just an update, I have found if I don't run the Haicom GPS info before I start MM Pocket navigator, I get a different error message instead I get GPS timeout after about 10 sec.
So I still have a problem, don't know what to do.

Any ideas??

I can't be too specific because I know nothing about Memory Map, I'm a TomTom user.

However, CF Card Generic is correct for when the Haicom is in the CF slot but it isn't going to work with the BT slipper. You need to change it.

Bluetooth Serial Port Com 5 does it for me.

it also depends on the ipaq you're using on my 2210 bits BT com port 8!

Again I don't know about mem map as I only have tomtom.

I am getting very disillusioned, the "b*****y" thing wont work.

When I try the blue tooth connection, the blue tooth link with the slipper connects ok, then when I open the gps software and try to open 'COM4 BlueTooth' on the IPAQ, the blue tooth connection fails straight away ... back to square one.

So far I have a useless GPS that times out with the software in the CF slot and won't connect with the bluetooth link. Very disappointed with it.

I have an IPAQ 2210, running Pocket PC ver. 4.20.1081, the GPS is a Haicom HI-303MMF with a HI-401BT bluetooth slipper.

the 2210 definately uses Bluetooth serial port COM8 wth the haicom slipper...

in tomtom the settings are

NMEA 0183v2 4800
Bluetooth serial port COM8

my 2210 (rom 1.10) does even give com 4 as an option.

one other thing - I don't have to select the gps unit from the bt manager - the tomtom gps app picks it up directly.

Success! At least in part, you are correct, with COM8 and some patience, it eventually links up using the GPS info software supplies with the Haicom GPS.
So now I can use the GPS through Bluetooth or CF card slot, but only have the GPSinfo software which works with it.

Does anyone run this GPS with memory Map software and have success??? All it seems to do for me is give a Timed out message through memory map.

Hi,
I use a 303mmf with bluetooth slipper and Memory map with no problems.

In the GPS setting on memory map (Menu;GPS; setup) fill in:-
Manufacturer NMEA

Model NMEA 0183,RMC

Port (there is a dropdown list here which will be different on your IPAC to my Axim, but memory map WILL list all available ports. There will probably be two that mention Bluetooth [in and out] ,pick the 'out' one or the higher number- it won't be the same port as if you have the 303mmf in the CF slot)

Baud 4800

This should work ok

Hi,

thanks for all the help so far, but still no joy. The haicom GPS will work OK with it's own GPSinfo software both as CF and bluetooth.

It just refuses to link with memory map. I have tried both the Sirf and NMEA settings on the incoming bluetooth port8 and all that happens is I get a 'GPS connection timeout' error message from memory map.

Try a soft reset and then start it up again straight to Memory Map. Do not fire up the supplied Haicom software. I think it does something naughty as it will work on its own, but nothing else will work afterwards.

That's my experience with TomTom anyway and yours may be the same problem.

Many thanks to all who have offered advice, I am very grateful for all your help!

I have finally succeded in getting the Haicom GPS to work, as some of you said it need to be set to NMEA, and the final solution was to start things up in the right order,
1. Connect blue tooth between PDA and slipper+GPS,
2. lean out of the window and wave GPS about until red light flashes and shows position fixed
3. Do not to use the haicom software, just start memory map, go to settings and choose com port 8 bluetooth

then bingo it works!

Happy now.
