My first SatNav was TomTom Navigator 2 (for PDA) software on a Compaq iPAQ 3970 PDA with a wired TomTom GPS, which I bought in early 2003. I think that that setup had both built-in POIs and the ability to load custom POIs. Can anybody confirm this?

I'm trying to work out which was the first commercially available SatNav that had built-in POIs and the year that it was released.

I'm also trying to work out the first commercially available SatNav that could take custom POIs and the year that that one was released.

I think that it was TomTom that was first with both the built-in and custom POIs but it would be nice if somebody knew for definite and could provide a URL to an article to confirm their answer. Thumbs Up

Many thanks,

My first SatNav, a Garmin i3, had built in POIs and could also use 3rd party POIs. That was released in 2005 (I got it not long after my eldest was born!)

My first SatNav was a Tomtom One, one of the originals, can't remember the year. I'm sure I used the OV2 and OGG database from here and it had a 'warn only when on route' so was directional.

When I first used it to go to the Inlaws it took me into their estate via a back road that did actually save about a mile or two.

In the early 90's my first was an A3-sized Philip's Navigator (1.5 miles to 1-inch) road atlas which had symbols all over the place to show me where POIs where, and an index in the back to easily locate places.

If I wanted a custom markers, I simply hand-annotated it with a highlighter mark and/or sticky label!

I used to use that to plan all my driving for work & leisure. Still use a newer version now, as a backup for when sat-nav signal disappears or the driving group is deciding what route we should take over breakfast (and then we go away and plot it into our respective sat-navs).
