Following on from our recent story of a reduction of speed fines in Wales, comes a story about a significant increase in Devon and Cornwall.
There were 19,094 speeding tickets paid in 2018, a record, and 7% more than the previous year.
There was a total of 46,363 motorists caught resulting in 2,186 court actions and 24,593 drivers attending speed awareness courses and 489 fines were cancelled.
According to Home Office figures, cameras were instrumental in detecting 97% of the over 2 million offences across England and Wales last year,
It is also reported that 74% of cases where drivers were caught ignoring traffic directions, such as following right of way road signs, were attributed to the use of cameras. _________________ Robert Brady |

Just proves it's all about the money and not road safety, otherwise drivers would not be speeding.
I saw at least two speed camera vans on the A38 coming back from Plymouth the other week. _________________ GO 620, Tomtom Android EU,

With these cameras being everywhere and anywhere I would have thought that road behaviour would have improved but it seems not.
Speeding is still a major problem, you speed, you pay. _________________ DashCam:

You'll need to explain the first sentence. |

Quite simple I thought?
They are happy for us to break speed limits everywhere while they sit in their vans targeting drivers for cash, but not actually stopping anyone from speeding. _________________ GO 620, Tomtom Android EU,

I often see it posted about it just being about the money.
I've never contributed ...... guess why _________________ DashCam:

| You'll need to explain the first sentence. | Quite simple I thought? | No it's not. Your explanation below is, but the above, makes no sense and neither BJ or I understood what you were on about. Quote: | They are happy for us to break speed limits everywhere while they sit in their vans targeting drivers for cash, but not actually stopping anyone from speeding. | I think the idea is that after several fines, you might just get the message and not speed. Alternatively, you might learn by hearing that others have been fined for speeding and thus not speed. Either way, you are now no longer speeding and their work is done.
Other than that, a third party cannot stop someone from speeding unless that someone is speeding. |

It still won't stop people speeding that don't have a licence or insurance and don't care. _________________ GO 620, Tomtom Android EU,

So what would you suggest as a viable, cost effective, 'non profit making' alternative.
Just have a free for all and hope everyone does as they are told by the speed limit signs? |

Fortunately the 'no licence, no insurance, don't care' mob are a small percentage. Those that do take to the road legally need to observe speed limits or face the self inflicted consequences.
Latest comical one yesterday was 2 side by side HGV's in the M4 smart motorway roadworks, in a reduced lane width stretch, taking all 3 lanes as they both seemed to be on identical 50mph cruise settings.
Matey-me-lad in his polish registered Octavia couldn't get past and was blasting his horn to no effect. Just made lorry No 2 straddle the outer lane a bit more _________________ DashCam:

Small numbers maybe but getting caught all the time around my area.
Recent catch- driver stopped for no insurance showing on PNC. Car seized. Following day the same driver stopped again , different car, still no insurance. Car seized.
And Mr Polish driver had better be careful. If UK resident his car will also be seized.

There used to be a law that if a car with foreign plates was here over 6 months then it had to be UK registered and given UK plates.
I assumed from that that it was under 6 months so difficult to trace. _________________ DashCam:

I remember coming back from Germany in 1988 and using the "6 month rule" to change plates back to UK. My employer at the time took exception and told me that if I wanted to continue to park in the staff car park, I had 2 weeks to register it properly. _________________ Garmin Drivesmart 51 LMT-D Europe |

Apparently it's not difficult. If the driver lives and works in the UK s/he will be considered resident and the car has to be re-registered in UK immediately.
If you trawl through the link I posted above there are numerous cases of drivers being caught. Perhaps my area Road Traffic Units are more pro-active than others but they are reeling them in daily. The car is seized under 'no insurance' so, as a minimum, it's £300 + 6 points + £200 recovery + DVLA registration and back tax. Whether any appeal is unknown but it is doubtful as the drivers know exactly what they are doing. Some are exporting UK rhd cars to their homne country re-registering it then returning to the UK to use it on foreign plates.
Stands out rather - foreign reg rhd car |
