See
https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/02/12/current_gps_epoch_ends/

for details of a date rollover on GPS system that might break the system for you.

They seem to be questioning older devices from non mainstream companies produced before 2010.

It's hard to imagine how the date would be involved in Route Calculations, but I could imagine it might upset Daylight Saving calculations ... and the automatic Day/Night display.

There could, I suppose, be an impact on Traffic Trends-type routing...if the day-of-the-week gets miscalculated.

Do any Garmin systems display the date?

I've been trying to contact Garmin about this to see if it's an issue with theirs. I know TomTom have a support page where you can enter your serial number and find out if there's an update or if it will need a replacement.

I would hope that with Garmin's history in GPS as well as aircraft and sea navigation, and their previous survival after the last one in 1999, that they'll be using the 13-bit version and not have an issue... Still, this is just speculation.

TomTom's link is mentioned in this post: https://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=98799

Yes, my Garmin handhelds do.

My Oregon 700 has a full calendar function, which highlights Today on its home page.
And the date, month, year can be shown in one of the optional data fields.
And the date is automatically shown on the heading of the Status dashboard (if chosen).

Dales.

The Y2K issue could raise its head again around 2050 if any old systems are still around.

The system I worked on went down the lines of ......

If YY is less than 50 then CC = 20, else CC = 19.

So the old YYMMDD became CCYYMMDD where CC was a simple calculation.

I think The Register's tipster may have embellished the story a little - the Dept. of Homeland Security's (pdf) only talks about possible problems "obtaining UTC from GPS Time"
