I've never used Android Auto, in fact, I'm not even sure that I know what it is but I do use an app on my phone to automate what happens when I connect to my car's Bluetooth.
To get CA to run in the background I assign another task to happen a few seconds later such as a navigation app or radio, etc.
Just wondering if this could be a solution for you? _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

Unfortunately I don't have any other app I would want to run and I don't use any of the automation apps.
Android Auto is just a simplified screen that just gives the bare requirements when driving, Navigate, call, play music buttons at the bottom and large messages on the main screen such as time to travel to work which if clicked will open the navigation. This is set to auto open when it pairs with the BT kit. It also sets the phone to "Car Mode".
Cameralert has a setting to open when the phone goes in to Car Mode.
So it has to be that way round
Now that I have tested it on the road the CA notifications do show up in front of the Android Auto screen so that bits fine.
For a new question, why does Android Auto insist on showing you the current weather for the current location, I can see that through the windscreen
