A trial of average speed cameras in Walcote, a village in Leicestershire, is dishing out £100 penalties to fifty motorists per day.
A spokeswoman for Walcote parish council commented: "I am very surprised that so many people are speeding even with the average speed cameras there. But on the whole, the traffic through the village is significantly slower, and I have not heard of anyone from the village who is not pleased at the difference."
The year trial is part of a wider initiative that includes two other Leicestershire villages - Sharnford and Measham.
A local councillor said: "Of the 600,000 vehicles passing camera sites in Walcote, Sharnford and Measham over a time period from September 15 to October 15, 0.78 per cent of the vehicles have been issued with notices."
He added: "The trial is not about catching and fining motorists for speeding – we want people to stick to the speed limits. We hope that these cameras will stop people from speeding, as it endangers the lives of other road users and pedestrians." _________________ Robert Brady |

Recently, I haven't seen so many of those signs which say "xx accidents in x months". Maybe it would be a clever idea to have them saying "xx speeding tickets issued last month"? Let's face it, nobody seems to pay attention to signs saying "kill your speed, not our children". _________________ Dennis

Or maybe a sign saying "£5,000 a day speeding tickets issued here". _________________ Dennis

Better off with a machine gun post on top of the speed camera
Or maybe a three strikes and you're out or three months automatic ban
Less of the soft attitude and more zero tolerance perhaps |
