I'm presuming that POI icons will show on the map and also when driving is this correct?
I'm basing this presumption on the fact you can load speed camera database onto Garmin units, so ou must see them on the map as well as hear their proximity alert.
I have one category of custom POIs in my .gpi file and one icon showed up at one point on a map display screen but I can't seem to replicate this at the moment.
I'm testing my own custom POIs in Jersey (there are approximately 350) so the island should effectively be covered with the POI icon.

I've never been able to see any camera icons on the map by just scrolling round. They only appear for me when driving or by using the GPS Simulation.
I can't help with non camera POI's as I've never had any. _________________ Satnav:

I went for a drive last night and the test POI appeared on the navigation screen whilst driving.
The only problem (whinge, whinge) is that a 24x24 sized icon on a 6.95" beast of a screen is hard to see, especial when the built-in POIs look more like 48x48 in size.
So my next question is: Can I increase the size of a custom POI icon so that it looks the same size as a built-in one? If so, what size is recommended?

The 44x44 ones are available in your CSV conv aren't they K? But I don't think they will do for the std. Garmin download.
Time to investigate the CSV to GPX converter Robert. |

Sorry for very late reply.
I think that I may have initially tried 48x48 on the basis that 24 x 2 = 48! that explains why 48x48 didn't work!
I'll have a go with 44x44 when I get home, but at the moment 24x24 are showing up albeit rather small on the screen whilst navigating.
However, for the last day or so I've had not POIs showing up on the Garmin when navigating. The zoom is fairly zoomed in.
What might I have done to stop the Garmin from displaying POIs whilst driving?

Hi sussamb,

No but when I unticked and then reticked it the POIs came back on screen. Weird.
Also, whilst the POIs are back, the Garmin doesn't appear to always show all POIs in the area - I'm running TomTom app on iPhone alongside the Garmin so I can see that sometimes a POI or two is not displayed.
I'm currently running POIs sized at 24x24 which is small for the Garmin. When I get home I'll try to run with 44x44 sized POIs for easier spotting and hopefully a better display with no missing POIs on screen.
Thanks for your help.

Hi M, K, and sussamb,
After nearly two weeks after getting home from Jersey I managed to investigate why I couldn't get larger icons to work on my Garmin, I had 24x24 sized icons working but as I had only received the Garmin unit a couple of days before the trip I didn't have the luxury of time.
I had used 44x44 sized icons (created by Mac Paint2) but Paint2 doesn't create Windows bmp files. When I used Mac GIMP to load the .bmp file and then export it as a Windows BMP file.
I am not artistic, when I need to make an icon I grab an image (in this case the Jersey flag), make the image the same height and width, then get the paint program to resize to 24x24, 44x44, etc. I add a singe pixel black border and that's the icon. I prefer to use Paint2 as it's as easy to use as Windows Paint but as I have to use GIMP I may try to use just GIMP in order to only have to use one program
I must have done the Paint2/GIMP process before with the 24x24 icons but I hadn't made notes so I forgot the process. I have now made notes!
Many thanks for all of you help and suggestions.

I haven't made icons for years.
Last time I did I used PSP as I could work in a grid set to 1x1 so I could see what I was doing.
I've got multi info POi's on my list for this week. _________________ Satnav:

Me neither, if I ever need an icon there are plenty of others who have done so and I end up using theirs

I need at least 44x44.
On my 2599 44x44 are large and ideal. Using 44x44 on the 2699 they look about half the size. I must check/compare the resolutions to see why.
I might have a go at creating an even larger set to see what happens. _________________ Satnav:

For some reason, I prefer to make an icon myself. As long as I can find a decent image that lends itself to being reduced in size down to 24x24 then I'm happy doing just that.

If you use Windows then the free Microsoft Paint program that you get bundled with Windows is good enough. It can resize images so that the height is the same as the width and then resize to 24x24 or 44x44 etc.
You can get Microsoft Pain to show individual pixels and a grid overlay

On my Camper 6.95" screen , the 24x24 were very small and the 44x44 were the right size. Please let us know if there are any larger sizes hat Garmin is happy to use.
