Hi,
I'm new to Garmin having got my first Garmin PND today a DriveSmart™ 50LMT-D
I have plugged the device into power (a desktop usb charging station) and it displays a startup screen with a battery symbol with a lightning bolt through it and the Garmin logo below that. Its been like this for 10 minutes now. If I disconnect it from the power it briefly shows a red battery almost empty symbol and then shuts down.
Is this normal?

Sounds like it's out of battery.
USB can charge it but at the level you describe that's going to take a few hours.
Best is to plug it into the car, the car cable charges much faster. _________________ Satnav:

Yep, needs a good charge. If you can fastest way is to charge from the mains ... next the car ... _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Thank you both. When connected to the car charger it started up straight away to the Where To screen.
Now that I have brought it back into the house it also starts up on the mains charger.
Next job, get a backup, before I mess anything up. _________________ Paul |

Thank you. I have several mains USB adaptors here which I can try.
I have taken a backup following sussamb's excellent instructions here: http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=95950&highlight=backup.
The device is currently connected to Garmin Express and downloading lots of updates. The first one failed (I don't know what it was), the second was successful (device software I think) and its now updating maps. It says that this operation is going to take another 4 hours and 6 minutes. _________________ Paul |

Well the time depends on many factors, but generally I find mine take under an hour ... I'm on Virgin broadband with a 70 Mbs pipe ...
I suspect that 4 hours will reduce considerably unless you have a really slow connection.
Well done on the backup, hopefully you'll never need it but always worth doing just in case ... _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

My connection is nearer 7Mbs than 70Mbps
The countdown is progressing in about real time so I suspect that the 4 hours may be real. I'm wondering if it will keep going when the computer goes into power saving mode, I may disable that to give it a better chance.
Thank you for the backup instructions, I could only see part of the file system on the device before I found the instructions. _________________ Paul |

Don't let the power save mode kick in, I've always found even the screensaver cuts it off.
Wiggle the mouse every so often.
Also, regardless of your BB speed the download seems to come in at 3Mbps so keep an eye on it. 50% of the progressbar is the download and the other 50 is the building files and install.
Garmin minutes are much like Microsoft minutes. _________________ Satnav:

I've switched off the powersave mode and the screensaver. I cant wiggle the mouse for the next 4 hours as my wife wants me to take her out for lunch. Seems reasonable after she bought me a new Garmin _________________ Paul |

and if you are running windows 10, it can be a bit picky with updating if windows is downloading its own updates in the background.
but it is best to disable the power saving options while performing the update - it is also faster at updating than the TomTom devices. |
