Leicestershire County Council have said that they want to keep the cash raised through speeding fines to pay for more speed cameras in their area.
Revenue is currently raised from thirteen fixed speed cameras and five mobile devices, but the money goes to the government.
The council is proposing that once the £50,000 cost of a new camera installation has been raised in fines, any further money goes to the Department of Transport.
It has also been reported that they are seeking more choice as to where to site cameras "so they can be installed based on a desire to have them rather than casualty figures".
A county council spokesman commented: "Speeding is a problem – particularly in rural areas. Measures we might use to tackle the problem – like speed humps – are often expensive and not well liked. Our view is that offenders should be asked to pay for new cameras. We have a number of communities requesting speed cameras and we would like to be able to install them where there is local support for them."
A spokesman for the council's Labour opposition group said: "Anything that keeps money in Leicestershire rather than sending to the Department for Transport is welcome. If they are successful, there'll be a tsunami of requests for cameras. I could give you 6 locations off the top of my head where they're welcome."
In regard to Community Speedwatch volunteers being first in the queue for cameras, he added: "After years of sterling work standing by the roadsides with their 'hairdryers' they'll feel hard done by if they're not."

Hmm. Interesting statement - speed cameras at £50,000 a go are cheaper and much more loved than speed humps. Lol. _________________ Dennis

Perhaps they're not interested in the safety aspect....... just the extra cash. Speed bumps right across the roads being a sure fire way to slow you down, but of coarse, these are 'not well liked' AND expensive ??... plus virtually maintenance free which they forgot to mention. By definition therefore we have to deduce that each of the £ 50,000 speed cameras installed are !!! (well liked) Ugh !! |
