|
|
Last week GoPro launched their Karma portable drone. This week DJI join the party with the Mavic, their take on the compact portable 4K camera equipped quadcopter.
The Mavic is a neat package, with the arms folded it takes up very little space and without a battery weighs a mere 750g.
But it comes equipped with a 4K camera mounted on a stablised gimbal and, thanks to obstacle sensors and a tracking system, it can even follow you, a feature lacking with GoPro's Karma . The Mavic's GPS receiver can track both GPS and Glonass satellite networks and, if you add a smartphone to the controller, you can stream live 1080p footage as you fly. In fact you can junk the controller completely and use your smartphone to control things.
The Mavic is available for pre-order right now at £999.00 and is expected to ship in mid-October.

It's US$999 not £999? Which should be £780 approx. A bargain - i don't think! |

Fun they may be but all operators should be licensed. A lot of footage posted suggest the current rules about height and proximity to people are regularly ignored. _________________ "You have reached your destination" |

Agree entirely that there needs to be more stringent regulation, the problem is policing it. One way would be to make it so unattractive that people don't buy the drones, and it looks like that will happen throughout EU very soon ...

This is a seriously powerful big of kit.
When you compare it to the other drones on the market (especially the new GoPro Karma), you're getting so much more for your money.
I like the removable gimbal on the GoPro. They'll sell a few based on that alone.
But the portability of this quadcopter is such an attractive proposition.
Being able to pull it out wherever you are and get flying.
Plus there are the extra battery life, included 4K camera and longer range of the Mavic.
There's a good comparison of the Phantom 4, Mavic and Karma here if anyone is interested - https://www.heliguy.com/blog/2016/09/26/dji-mavic-pro-vs-phantom-4-vs-gopro-karma/ |

I must be missing something. What does this give me? The ability to take pictures/videos of me?
I don't see what drones are useful for. Can someone enlighten me? |

There are different sorts of drones, you can have racing drones which are effectively like remote controlled helicopters or airplanes.
The DJI Mavic and the GoPro Karma are the latest drones for photography and video, they are used for just that - taking photos and videos from positions and angles that would be difficult, expensive, or just impossible any other way.
The cost of drones is falling to such a point that non-professionals can pick one up for less than £1,000 and use them for their own photos, or videos.
