Inoperative speed cameras in Northants are costing £5,000 per year to maintain.
Forty seven fixed speed cameras were switched off five years ago due to budget cuts and there are no immediate plans to reinstate them.
A Freedom of Information request has now revealed that cameras in the area go though an annual maintenance procedure to check that they are safe, free from graffiti and are clean.
The cameras, although not working, are left in place as they still deter many motorists from speeding.
A spokesperson for the local authority commented: "We have retained the structures in place and continue to face them strategically towards the carriageway in order to take advantage of their significant deterrent factor to speeding motorists and consequent positive effect on driver behaviour."
They added: "The sites are also continuously analysed in terms of collision rates but there is no evidence to suggest that decommissioning cameras in Northamptonshire has contributed to any rise in collisions or road death numbers."
interesting - I'm sure that a few months after the initial switch off, there was a local newspaper article with stats about how speeds had changed past the cameras. Implication was that they continued to collect the data, but had no staff or budget allocated to process it.

Forty seven cameras left in place? I suspect that means 47 camera BOXES. Costing £5,000 a year? I suspect that's some sort of calculation based on the price of the local govt staff to drive round surveying and maintaining ALL the street furniture - it doesn't take long to drive past noticing they are still standing, not vandalised and clean. And anyway, for a mere £5,000 a year they still get the main benefit of the empty boxes - drivers slow down in a panic, because who knows, they might just be working. Ceratinly I wouldn't recommend we delete all our cameras there. _________________ Dennis
