HELP please, dangerous attachment

This email arrived in my inbox a week ago and I marked it as Junk and deleted it right away. It came back. I have deleted it every day at least once ever since it came, but it comes back, into my Junk mailbox.

The sender says Corinne733@gawth.com

Any advice on how I can get rid of it permanently please? The attachment appears to be a Microsoft Excel file (.xls) so I'm guessing it probably contains an auto-run macro to do something which I really wouldn't like!

All I can think of is to setup an email rule that it gets deleted on arrival.

Is this an email address you can lose and create another one?

Unfortunately I can't dump that email address - it's the main one with a bunch of aliases (whatever that means) dependent on it.

As for Rules, I've done that. But the thing is it has the same date as original, 13th February, all the time, so it doesn't appear to be arriving again.

Hallo! is that a 13th February virus?

What email client are you using Dennis? Is the email downloaded to your computer or are you using a webmail setup?
An autorun macro in excel only runs when you open the spreadsheet, or have you already done that?

DOH - What's a client? My email is imap if that's meaningful (runs on the server I think - at any rate, not actually downloaded like smtp - blimey, I'm getting smartypantsy!). All other emails which I delete disappear. First they disappear into my Trash mailbox and I then go and delete them from that rather than leave them to the setting which removes deleted emails after some days.

I know the macros only run when I open the file, that's why I haven't opened it (I occasionally used autorun macros myself back in the day when there was a decent spreadsheet program, Lotus123).

A client is a program that runs on your computer and allows you to read emails. MS Outlook is one for instance.
If your problem emails are on the server and not on your local computer, I suspect that you will have to get on to your email provider.

Just remembered, I had some 'data request' emails with an excel s/s attached a couple of days ago, but they just deleted. They are in my deleted items box on the server, but not on my computer.

Yes, my procedure is to delete the email from my Junk folder - it reappears (moved) in the Trash (deleted) folder. I delete it from the Trash folder and it disappears. In my ignorance, I feel that allowing stuff to remain anywhere after I've deleted it is poor practice, so I delete the contents of my deleted (Trash) folder before quitting my mail whatsername (client?).

Next time I start Mail, it reappears in my Junk folder. I have now done the above deletes to it four times this morning.

Sort of topical talking of IMAP. Bo Peep and I are currently using POP3 email addresses and I've started to look at going IMAP so that we can use our PCs for email when at home but also our iPhones or iPads when we're out and about.

Anyway, back to DennisN's problem email, we use a product called MailWasher Pro. The idea is that you launch MailWasher Pro first to check for spam and unwanted emails, you can set up rules for friends and spam. You then delete the unwanted emails before launching your email client (e.g. Microsoft Outlook, Pegasus Mail, Mozilla's Thunderbird, Eudora, Apple Inc.'s Mail, etc). MailWasher Pro will work with multiple email accounts. You can even get MailWasher App for your iPhone but I haven't tried that yet.

The reason for using something like MailWasher is that you delete the unwanted and dangerous emails from the server before you download them to your local computer where they might cause you a problem.

MailWasher Pro is for Windows, not sure if you can get it for Mac yet.

But Mailwasher is only relevant if you are using a POP mailbox to delete the mails before you D/L them to your computer. If you are using a webmail type account, then you can delete them using that, but it seems like Dennis is doing the latter, but it doesn't delete from the server (or recreates itself).
Does your email provider support IMAP?

I don't much fancy setting up rules to delete email before I see them - my idea of rules isn't necessarily very bright and I wouldn't want to delete something without looking first. I am already unhappy enough with Apple Mail's junk filter - I wish it wouldn't, as I think I'm quite capable of making up my own mind, especially as it junks some (but not all) notifications from pgpsw.

I imagine I'm going to have to speak to Apple about this one, but for some reason I think they may not be able to help this time.
