|

Gibraltar has been persuaded to introduce speed cameras to its roads.
Following a petition to the Gibraltar government that received over 2,000 signatures, the British Territory is preparing to install cameras "at select points".
Richenda Collado Dawes, whose motorcyclist son Gareth was killed last October in an accident with a car, lead the initiative by starting a petition on Change.org, a free petition tool.
Her very simple, but effective call to action read:
To:
Her Majesty's Government of Gibraltar
Install fixed speed cameras and implement a penalty points system for driving licences in Gibraltar without delay.

Having driven in Gib, I am not quite sure where they would be sited to catch anybody speeding, unless they were set to activate at 20mph!

I've served there and I'm struggling to imagine where they'd go, unless they plan on putting some on the runway. Bizarre. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Yeah, I've been there too. I can't help thinking this is going to be an expensive white elephant. |

I realise it's over 55 years since I went into Gibraltar off a troopship, but I can only recall walking! _________________ Dennis

According to an example local report at time, her son was the one speeding on his bike along with others on possibly the only road on the penisular that you can get any speed on.
Along with the cameras, she is also asking for points to be put on licences which makes me think it's not currently done.
All in all, this is a mum trying to organise a deterent to stop other families loosing their kids like she has.

The tunnel where this happened is terrible. Very dark, full of pollution haze, yet people seem to think it's an idle place to overtake you and shoot off at speed. I can't see how anyone else would have been able to see anymore that I could or travel any faster safely having just entered the tunnel from the bright sunlight outside.
I was there this summer. |
