Tomtom with TomTom Traffic (the new name for HD traffic).
Garmin's HD traffic does not take into consideration the traffic on minor roads, to my understanding. _________________ David |

That may be true in Canada/US but in the UK it does more than cover the major routes. But it doesn't cover all roads that's for sure, but then TT doesn't either |

I'm not so sure, I think Garmin's offering does cover more than you may expect. Inrix on a Smartphone has a quick easy button to report a traffic incident or jam wherever you are.
I've seen Garmin traffic reports on a few very minor roads that have turned out to be accurate.
If I open Inrix now it tells me I have over 6000 Inrix users in my local area so I can understand how popular and accurate it is. _________________ DashCam:

Yes I'd accept some minor roads may give traffic reports but as you say it depends on users reporting it, so I guess it depends how you interpret 'covers all roads'. You may very well run across something on the monor roads that hasn't been reported yet, whereas the major routes depend more on the various systems that rely on fixed 'traffic sensors'.
Overall though I'm very happy with Garmins digital traffic. |

The new HD Traffic is good, roadworks excellent (even in Wales), and does pick up around as much as the TomToms, although I would say for secondary roads it does pick it up much later than a TomTom
Neither seems as goods as the Traffic built in to Garmins Navigon Traffic App, so some reason this seems excellent - just wish it wasn't on a phone! _________________ TomTom Go Live 6100, 600

I use both TomTom HD Traffic and Garmin Digital Traffic side by side and there is not much difference between them.
The Garmin Digital reports traffic on all types of roads, so not sure why people are saying it does not. Perhaps getting confused with older Garmin traffic types.
TomTom has the slight edge on update speed, but there is little in it really.
I am using TomTom Traffic on Android, just for reference. _________________ GO 620, Tomtom Android EU,

Hi All,
Sorry to hijack this thread but as I'm in in a similar boat, thinking of replacing my Go Live 1000 (after 3-4 years ) because I'm getting 'battery too hot' warning messages when charging.
I appreciate new battery may help but as I fancy a new PND device and work will pay for it can I have others recommendations.
Always been a TomTom user because of the traffic but if I understand correctly then Garmin is as good now?
What would people go for with a budget of £300, must be able to accept custom POI's, have traffic information plus I only need UK/Ireland maps.
Thanks in advance. |

@sussamb, many thanks for the comments and links.
I like the look of the 3598. A couple of final questions for previous TomTom now Garmin users if I may;
is there any way to transfer my TomTom POI (customers) onto Garmin devices and how big is the traffic horizon with digital traffic on the garmin? |

Hi Brucey, I have just sent my 3598 back for a refund, It had the latest maps and software on it but I was still getting the grey screen. It seems as if they have a major problem with that unit so I would go for a older model like the 2598. |

2598 isn't an 'older' model, but I agree the 25x7/8 series doesn't have the grayscreen issues that some 35x7/8 models have. |

I almost always experienced the grey screen issue when using Smartlink and Digital Traffic, since the latest update I haven't seen it - although now I've done some trials, and the digital traffic is better than the smartlink (which shouldn't be the case, but is) _________________ TomTom Go Live 6100, 600

I would love to use the supplied cable but I have no fag socket near where I want the unit and I hate trailing cables.
As it is I've semi hard wired mine in with a third party unit. The Smartlink seems OK for me though, always been accurate. _________________ DashCam:

Yes SmartLink is quite good, just Digital is better and free - it doesn't make sense to me when their Navigon traffic on smartphone is better than both!
I was expecting (for no reason than it makes sense) for them to use the same data _________________ TomTom Go Live 6100, 600
