|
|
Bought the Nuvi 2548 LMT last week, very impressed with this unit, and being a loyal tomtom man for the last few years think I am a converted to Garmin. However I was contemplating buying the nuvi 3598,and after reading a few reviews on the Halfords web site there seems to be a problem with the screen going grey occasionally. Is this a common problem or just pot luck, and if so has it been fixed with an update from Garmin.
Also while I am here are there any video's explaining how to create route's and uploading them to the Nuvi using basecamp.
Thank you.

Hi, hope you don't mind me jumping in I was thinking about buying one too. Iv'e never owned a garmin before always a TT and was wondering if its worth it as I have heard mixed reviews can anyone help if the latest updates have helped with the unit. Also I have read that you need a sd card to update the maps is that true? |

Map updates may require a card, simply depends on how big the maps, voice files etc get in future, what else you load onto your satnav and what you've deleted off it as Garmins come equipped for worldwide use so there are numerous help, language etc voice files that can be removed.
Adding a card though is no big deal. I run my nuvi with a card, which contains the Garmin Western Europe map, a US map and a UK topographic map. |

My 2597LMT has full European mapping.
I did put a SD card in just to be on the safe side but so far nothing has written to it and I've got the latest full Euro maps having updated twice since I bought it.
Not the same model but I've never had the grey screen issue. _________________ DashCam:

Me neither, but it does seem limited to the 35x7/8 models. |

Hi thank you for your quick replies, one more question how is the algorithm on garmins and the routes that it takes,as I sure I read that they are not as good as the TT routes. Thanks again just want to make sure before I take the plunge. |

Can't help on that one as I only use mine for the PGPSW cameras and the Smartlink Traffic.
My car has a built in SatNav that seems to give good routes _________________ DashCam:

Well I've used Garmins for years and they generally route OK, but like any satnav worth checking rather than blindly following. On most of the current ones, and certainly on the 25x7/8 and 35x7/8 series you can get a choice of up to three routes displayed on the map, and choose the one you prefer. |

Having gone from a TomTom 1005 to a Garmin 3598 I must say the TomTom routing algorithm wins hands down over the Garmin.
The Garmin has a strange desire to send me down some of the most obscure roads imaginable.
That said though I do not regret getting the 3598 it is a quality bit of kit and saves me approx £70 a year with free map updates and free traffic. |

I assume you've adjusted your routing and avoidance settings?
I only occasionally feel my nuvi's made a wrong choice, but later on checking a 'proper' map it doesn't seem so wrong. Also note that when you do a Where to and select somewhere to navigate you have a choice of Routes, Info and Go. Don't be too hasty and simply hit the Go. Hit Routes instead and you'll be presented with a choice of up to 3 routes on the map. Pick the one that you prefer. |
