|
|
I drive in Europe every year and use a Trackstick Mini to log my route,
the problem is that I have to take my laptop with me to download the data
and to view my route in Google Earth.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a good GPS receiver that will log
the files in a format that an Ipad will recognise or alternately a good tracker App they can suggest for the Iphone /Ipad. |

Without a doubt the Bad Elf is what you need. I use the Pro model (connect up to 5 devices and it will data log on a stand alone basis all day before needing a recharge). The associated app is good and allows you to export as kml or gpx as well as archiving trips - have a look at the various models on their website
I'm currently using it with the OSM based PocketEarth app for route planning etc in New Zealand
It was reviewed on this site a couple of years ago |

Hi Kritou,
It was only yesterday when I was doing a search on Bad Elf that I realised that you had replied to my post as I had received no notification of it.
Anyway the reason I was looking was because I have just bought a Bad Elf Pro which arrived yesterday, and after reading your post I downloaded Pocket Earth onto my Ipad to have a play with it.
As you have had yours longer than me. Lol, have you found any other maps that work well with it and also have you experimented with the Data Logging sampling rate at all.
Any advice would be grateful.

Go to their website and select the Apps option to see the extensive selection of compatible ones - I have used PocketEarth and GoogleEarth quite a lot
On the flight back from NZ I amused myself by positioning the Bad Elf near the window and following our progress on the PocketEarth offline mapping in some detail. Had I thought about it earlier I would have downloaded even more detailed mapping when I still had an internet connection
Still experimenting with logging rates - and there is a lot to discover. For example when you configure the logger there is a "smart filter" option that has a number of sub menus. I took mine on a cycle ride and when I later downloaded the trip found several waypoints I had marked were not showing on the map. This was because I had not set the smart filter to "cycling" and therefore anytime at less than 7mph was omitted! This level of detailed explanation is sometimes missing - but an email to their ever helpful tech support rapidly elicited an answer
If you want to pm me we could set up a quick method of exchanging hints etc (I don't do FB etc however) |

Hi,
After using my Bad Elf Pro for over 5 years it has finally packed in.
Can anyone recommend a suitable and cheaper replacement, or a tracker iPhone App.
Many Thanks |

That Pocket Earth app that I mentioned previously has a tracking mode - in fact you can simultaneously follow a created route and record a track
Sorry to hear about your BEPro.I wonder if it might be worth contacting them to see if the unit can be serviced or replaced at a discount?
Cheers |

Thanks for the quick reply.
I have already been in touch with them and they have been very helpful.
I sent them a short video showing the problem, and they directed me to their support page where it says that they will replace the LCD for $49.99. If its anything other than that, then they wont be able to do anything and will refund me the repair charge. I will have to pay the postage of course.
So at the moment I am seriously thinking of doing it, but before I do I am going to have a look at the App you mentioned. |
