GO 820 or 750

My well-loved GO 540 has just died so I need a replacement that won't cost the earth and will still allow me to use PGPS speed cameras and POIs so any suggestions would be very welcome.

At the moment I'm torn between an 820 and a 750 for use in the UK only - or might there be something better?

I'd probably go for the 750 if you want something as much like your old 540 (The only difference in hardware I can remember is the lack of a light sensor on the x50 series).
It will be good to have a spare windscreen mount as they are exactly the same between the x400 and x50 models.
I DON'T like the "Easyport" mount on the 820. I find them very fiddly to detach and re-attach every time you leave the car.

Any reason not to get a 550, though? If you only need UK maps, it might be a bit cheaper.

Where were you hoping to find one? TomTom sometimes have refurbished stock, or was it going to be eBay?

TBH I'd avoid the new moels, there's just too many missing features.

I had heard there was hardware for it on the x50's but the software doesn't use it.

The x50's and later ranges DO still change between day and night colours, but they do it by using a "look-up table" for sunset times and just change at that time. So there is no gradual dimming, and no chance to dim the screen if you go into a tunnel or under overhanging trees.

However, I can borrow my wife's 950 in the morning and tell you for sure. Smile

Yesterday morning, my GO550 Live was stuck on night colours and it took a reboot to get rid of the damned things. I had set it to switch automatically, but it didn't go back to daylight colours. (the time was correct).

EDIT to add... It does have the little sensor window to the right of the screen, but covering it with a finger/thumb makes not a blind bit of difference.

I have had my 750 since launch and use it practically every day. I got it to replace a very old original TomTom Go Classic.

It does work very well. Occasionally I will get a spontaneous reboot, but that has only started happening since I installed the latest software (NavCore I think it's called). Hopefully it will stop when it gets another update.

Apart from that, Live services work well.

I wouldn't leave home without it!
