It seems that average speed cameras around Junction 30 -32 on the M1 are subtly different from all the others. They're rear facing.

Why is that a notable difference? Well, until now, motorcyclists, with no front number plate, have been able to ignore average speed cameras. But not any more.

It's not clear if this change is one we'll see rolled out to other installations, or even if the necessary approval for processing offences from these cameras is in place, but we'll investigate further.

Regardless, the message is clear, no-one can afford to ignore average speed cameras.

What I can't understand is why 'they' haven't done this before.

I've been through several sets over the last few months with rearward facing cameras. One set I remember is the M25 around the Gatwick area. Wondered why it had been done, now I know Smile

They have done this before.

The roadworks section of the M25 between J5 & J6 has a mixture of front- and rear-facing cameras.

They've got them on the A12 too in the roadworks around the Chelmsford area. Been there for a good 2 months or so now.

"Regardless, the message is clear, no-one can afford to ignore average speed cameras."

Apart from those who have yet to grasp the concept of "average speed".

Very Happy

The ones on the A38 alongside the M6 toll have been rear facing since they went in, years ago!

The funny thing is, the final camera southbound, is just before the de-restriction sign, and the amount of motorists that speed up when they see it, are blissfully unaware that there is a camera literally 50 yards before it.

Don't they need to be able to see the drivers face for a successful prosecution?

Unless they are really close to the average limit already, it won't make enough difference to take them over the limit.

They would not be rear facing if that were true Rolling Eyes

Is that a manufacturers logo on the speed camera? I didn't think it was ok for any government/official dept to promote a brand especially on a motorway. On subject, I wonder how many bogus number plates there are because I can't believe so many drivers that go through these systems at high speed are that daft.
