Problems "locking on" to satelites

Had an iPaq 3850 for a while, so not exactly a beginner, but possibly a numbskull? I have been using the 3850 with Navman jacket and Navman software successfully for quite a while, however, since installing TomTom 3 I find that the Navman jacket has problems with reception. It finds many satelites but the colour is only grey most of the time. When they do change to red and get a fix, it usually loses it after a few seconds. Any clue as to what I am doing wrong?
(I still have Navman SmartST Pro installed - should I remove it?
Will I then need extra drivers for the jacket?
Could my bluetooth car phone be the cause?
Am I really a numbskull?)
