I was considering buying a handheld GPS, and decided to go for a Garmin Etrex, because they seem fairly common and thus may be a good buy ?
I looked at the basic Etrex which will fulfil my immediate needs for basic hiking and lake boating, then thought maybe the Venture because it includes thepc cable and extra features for a little more.
I then thought maybe the legend would be useful with the EU basemap but have no idea how much detail it shows ? I would mainly use it in Ireland and it would be nice if it showed the major rivers and lakes such as the Shannon etc. I would also usein France particuarly around Paris. There do not seem to be any Cdroms from Garmin covering Ireland (north and south) are there any third party maps that can be used with the Garmin?
I would also use it possibly with Autoroute 2004 (more as a toy than a nav aid as I know all the main roads in Ireland anyway !)
Any comments or suggestions as to wether the Garmin decision is the right one etc ?

I have an eTrex Legend that I use when walking in England and I have found it to be very good. However, to set up routes for walking I use Memory-Map 2004 OS which has the GB Ordnance Survey maps. I do not think that the Garmin MapSource maps would be suitable for setting up routes unless you get the coordinates of points from other topographical maps.
Do you use the Ordnance Survey of Ireland maps when you go walking? Ideally what you want is a PC program like that from Memory-Map that has digital versions of the OS Ireland maps.
I will do a bit more searching. Perhaps Mike can help.
