TomTom Go Camper and Caravan (based on TomTom Go 1005)

The TomTom Go Caravan and Camper is, on the face of it, a very good sat nav - reasonably easy to use, good maps and good route planning. However, if you have owned previous devices in the TomTom Go and LIVE series (prior to the 1000 series on which the caravan and camper model is based) you are possibly in for some disappointment followed by frustration and anger at TomTom's utter failure to address your concerns.

For the 1000 series and beyond, TomTom have completely re-written the computer interface software - and to be quite honest, it is rubbish. If you were used to connecting your earlier model to your computer and using "operate my Go" in the "TomTom Home" interface to plan the route on your monitor before saving to the device - forget it. TomTom have removed this function completely! Likewise "Itinerary Planning" - GONE! The nearest you can approach this is to set way points on a route. This feature is difficult to use - especially since you can only do it on the device itself now - and you are restricted to a maximum of three way points on any route. Also - TomTom have ended their relationship with Google and substituted their own internet search program and database - it is absolutely rubbish.

Worst of all, despite a lot of complaints in the company's official forums about these downgrades - and calls to customer services, TomTom have steadfastly ignored all request even for an explanation of *why* these downgrades have happened.

I kept my "TomTom Carvan and Camper" because, at the end of the day, the special features for vehicle size give me a certain peace of mind - but I will no longer recommend TomTom devices to my friends as I have in the past. It is only the specialised features for motor homes and caravans that induce me to give the 1000 series a neutral rating

Have to agree with all of this. You would need to own a very big rig to benefit much from it and you'd think that at this price, you'd be able to key in a postcode without having to swap screens. I also get the feeling that the facilities have been considerably downgraded and not being able to see it on My Computer makes you feel as if you're being treated like a naughty boy.

You can still use TYRE to plan your route in Google maps then transfer it to your tomtom.

This has been available for a little time now and tomtom are promoting the TYRE software even sending out a copy with the new rider5 motorcycle units

The basic TYRE software is free or you can upgrade fora small annual fee.

I have been using TYRE for many years and find it so much easier to use than the clumsy tomtom interface in tomtom home. I think Tomtom probably realised there were far better options out there.

Just to add, I've had TomTom ONE (v1 and v3) since 2006 for car, wanted something for motorhome routing, so have just bought the TomTom Camper.

I was a bit annoyed that you have to have a PC/broadband connection to set it up, and it took 2 hours to download map update (must be a TomTom server issue, as my broadband would normally download 3Gb in about 20 minutes), and another hour to update device over USB (how can it be so slow?) ! The MyTomTom toolbar icon/website is slightly awkward to work out, but for what I did on Home (updates only) it is OK, I don't like the lack of backup facility though, but in the past I only used this to restore back from a flakey software update, I never used the PC to plan routes, I always do this on the TomTom using map view to add POI's/favourites which I can still do on this.

Once the initial PC setup was done however it works nicely, I added my POI's from the old TomTom using 'add community content' with the ov2 and bmp files, which works fine (you seem to have to restart tomtom camper to pickup which confused me initially). I renamed the files to start 0 (zero) otherwise they are scattered through the huge list of built in POI's, which isn't very convenient.

The magnetic mount is very slick, and much easier than plugging in the mini usb cable on my ONE v3.

The UI is neat, annoyances are having to toggle letters/numbers to enter postcodes which is barmy, also certain screens are very slow responding ie entering city names you enter 3 characters then have to wait for about 10 seconds for the list of town names to update so you can select the one you want (or enter more letters if needed).

I am still wincing at the cost, but it does seem OK so far.

Hi All,

Not new to the forum but have not been around for a while and forgot my username and password hence the first post (Newbie)

Purchased a Tom Tom Camper & caravan yesterday from a guy/dealer on ebay and it arrived today brand new still sealed. I didn't know at the time but you have to register for the free lifetime map updates. It wasn't until I had completed the online form and sent the receipt that I found out if you buy from ebay you are not eligible for the free lifetime map updates, so a bit gutted about that but life goes on.

I have plugged the Tom Tom in and done all the updates which as said before took ages to perform, but what I would like to know is how do you add your old POI's from an older Tom Tom using community content, I've not seen this facility on Mytomtom, can somebody point me in the right direction please. My previous tom tom is a Go 750 Live.
