pocketgpsworld.com
Whilst Sussex Safer Roads Partnership reports that 99.9 per cent of motorists heed the 40mph speed limit through the A23 roadworks just south of Crawley, they say that one car has been caught speeding by its average speed cameras 13 times and 233 vehicles have broken the limit more than once. The roadworks are part of road widening scheme.

Out of a total of 2,536 motorists that were caught by the cameras, 46 will face court proceedings for "extensive breaches of the limit", 826 have received a £60 fine and three penalty points on their licence and 1,664 have been given the opportunity to attend a speed awareness course.

Sussex Safer Roads Partnership commented: "With approximately 70,000 vehicles using the A23 every day, the latest figures demonstrate that the vast majority of drivers recognise the need for the limit."

Police are still establishing who the driver was who broke the limit 13 times.

Here you go, another generalisation by a Partnership. It is not necessarily that 'the vast majority of drivers recognise the need for the limit.' but that the vast majority of drivers abide by it

I wuz about to say that too....

It's like saying we agree with the police being armed because we haven't actually been shot by one of them yet!

If the police weren't armed how could they put handcuffs onto people and grab the baddies? I mean, I'm all for equal rights and anti-discrimation but surely having arms is a key requirement for arresting someone? Also, all the paperwork would be quite hard to write up afterwards too...

Anyway, Off Topic

Don't apologise MaFt, it was, after all, just a 'armless bit of fun. Reminds me of the time our local council advertised a vacancy for a home visitor, saying it needed somebody with a driving licence and a car. But adding that if the successful applicant couldn't drive, a vehicle and driver would be provided. Surprised

Anyway, back on topic, this seems to answer all those people who keep asking if average speed cameras actually work, has anybody been done by them?

Yes they have. And my son was caught in the A1(M) road works. I told him they worked, but would he listen?

I hope that the police first checked the registered keeper's address of the vehicle that keeps on getting caught!

Surely this is an excellent example to show that relying on just speed cameras is insane! You very rarely see a police car on the roads nowadays.

If the police can't identify the driver, then it's a good guess that the vehicle's registered address and/or owner is no longer correct. Perhaps the driver has no licence and the car is not insured or has a current MOT! Shocked

And it's quite clear when driving through average speed camera areas that some drivers just do not grasp the concept of average speed, witnessed by the fact they brake to the speed limit at each camera!

Len

Still Off Topic I saw a poster in London once advertising for a Council driver, it said it was an equal opportunities employer and visually impaired applicants would be welcomed.

Just go's to show that how drivers react to speed cameras " slow down to pass it then speed up till next one" that is the mentality of drivers that need to have a fine and points and higher insurance.

I just wish there where a lot more of the average speed cameras put on normal roads not just construction zones and more so on duel carage ways with a 30max limit approaching schools. Very Happy

Down my way on the stretch of the M5 between M4/M5 interchange and M5 J21 and also along the M4 to Wiltshire there are many, but they are unmarked BMW's and Audi's so they are there, it’s only when they light up that you see them. Police

I agree, the number of people driving below the limit and still brake for speed cameras is very annoying. These people should be punished.

Or perhaps the registered owner of the vehicle simply can't remember who was driving at the time and has passed it back to the police to supply higher resolution photos that show who was driving?
