Hope I'm not asking a stupid question, if I update my iPhone to ios6 is it business as usual with the app, I only ask because apple have done away with google maps and I know the app uses google mapping ? |

It will all work fine.
The app, technically, uses Apple's MapKit for the maps which prior to iOS6 used Googles map tiles. From iOS6 the app still uses Apple's MapKit but the newer version now uses Apple's own map tiles.

Yes, but if you're driving through the real Luton then you will be in fields unless you're on the new South Coast version of Luton :D

I have an iPad and iPhone4S both of which are now on IOS6. The new satellite imagery looks extremely bad compared to what we had before and does not even appear on the iPhone4S if you allow auto zoom on the app. |

That's an extreme example. The majority of the mapping is correct (they use TomTom map data so not sure how they got Luton so wrong!!). However the POIs are appalling...

My wife has a 3G iPad2. She uses it mainly for facetime, but also for maps when she is out and about. I assume that you would recommend that she does not update to iOS6? What new stuff is on there that will make it worthwhile despite the problem with the maps? _________________ Peter

Facetime over 3G (obviously eats at data costs/allowance)
Do not disturb (set times for when alerts/notifications will be silenced)
erm... other stuff too that I can't recall right now!!

MaFt
thanks for that. Facetime over 3G will be useful for her. Have you tried it yet? Does it suffer with poor quality like Skype? When you say eats up data any idea how much. My wife gets 500Mb per month for a fiver (giffgaff), and she never uses much of it.
I suppose she has to weigh up loosing Google maps against facetime on 3G. Would be useful to speak to our daughter when we are out and about. I assume she can still get Google maps, satellite and street view using Safari to go to Google's website can she?
Sorry for all the questions. I am not a great iPad lover (walled garden) but my wife loves it and finds it easy to use. Her laptop is rarely used now. _________________ Peter

Mapping issues are NOT due to Tomtom, I sent them a link to the BBC article and they responded saying their data IS correct, Apple have just screwed it up!

Hmmmm I just wonder, bearing in mind they would say that anyway wouldn't they?
I am struggling to understand what Apple could do to TTS maps to insert the incorrect spelling of Doncaster, and move Luton to the south coast (according to MaFt). The POIs are more easily explained if Apple decided to use their own rather than TT's. A conspiracy theorist (not me) would suggest that TT deliberately threw in some wobblies in order to boost sales of their app. _________________ Peter

Doncaster is spelt correctly on my Tomtom, and Luton is correctly listed to the North of London.
Why would Tomtom say it is not their data at fault?
Their image is on the line as everybody is, incorrectly, saying it is their data that is wrong? It would be in Tomtom's interest to prove otherwise to encourage more people to buy their devices and map with good data, not have duff data on every iOS 6 device, thus tarnishing their image!

You have answered the question you posed in the 2nd paragraph with the 2nd sentence in the 3rd paragraph. Because it is in their best interests to say it.
As for the problems with Doncaster and Luton I know they are OK in the TT app, but they are not OK on the iOS maps based upon the TT maps. And, as I said I am struggling to understand how that could happen, given that Apple's input into the maps themselves should have been minimal. The POIs I can understand if they are Apple's POIs and not TT's. _________________ Peter
