|
|
Following hot on the heels of the debate over driver distraction comes this great concept from Garmin for a new in-vehicle controller.
Their multi-controller is designed to control the essential functions of your in-car entertainment system including audio, communications, apps and last but not least, navigation.
Similar controllers are of course already available. Mercedes, BMW and Renault are just some of the manufacturers who offer solutions such as this but Garmin's concept goes a good deal further.
The system consists of a control wheel, a touchpad, buttons and a large high-level, dash -mounted display. An easy to use menu system allows the driver to access the relevant systems quickly and with minimal distraction and the buttons surrounding the control wheel enable quick selection of a function by touch.

How does this reduce driver distraction when it adds to the list of gadgets the driver can control on the move from a central controller?
Answer: it doesn't. Quite the opposite, it should be consigned to the 'bad idea' heap. |

I agree , with my steering wheel already covered in switches and buttons, another set added would keep me permanently distracted whilst driving ! _________________ Don't Take Life too Seriously-You'll Never Get Out Alive |

But it controls the car stereo. So, in essence, it is no more distracting as there are no extra buttons in the car.

So you think it OK to operate a satnav on the move? This type of controller is designed for that, driver use whilst driving, isn't it? |

'Fraid so.
If you were a driver who COULDN'T operate a satnav at the same time as driving THEN I'd be worried. The whole skill of driving is multi-tasking.
Otherwise where does it end? Ban manual gears because it is a distraction having to take your hand off the wheel to find the gear lever?
(Actually, I'll admit that can be awkward sometimes, but only when I have my phone AND a fag in the other hand... ) _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

I'll have to remember that, "If you don't want one... don't buy it." I'm surprised no one's thought of it before |

Lol....from reading this forum it appears everyone know everything about anything, yet never has a good word to say about it .
All we appear to do is try to rubbish everyone else's purchase or their brilliant deconstruction of all products and ideas on the market . _________________ Don't Take Life too Seriously-You'll Never Get Out Alive |

Before Garmin start faffing about with remote control ashtrays and drop-down sunvisors that illuminate a little mirror and spray a touch of Kalvin Klein's Obsession For Mondeos, may I suggest:
a) Develop a navigation algorithm that gives you Fastest Time when you select Fastest Time and not; here's my suggested route..oops ignore me? let me recalculate, there you go, 10 minutes quicker.
b) Somehow figures out that farm tracks, although unrestricted, are not driveable at 60 mph.
c) Delivers reliable traffic information. I don't care how many third parties are involved, if it isn't reliable forget it.
Now THAT is something worth buying.
p.s. How do I switch the ashtray off? |
