My Go 500 will not accept full postcodes, it will only take the first part of the code. This is useless as postcode areas can be huge so there's no chance of getting to destination if the street/road is unknown. So, is there a way to get this to work?
Cheers.

What version of the postcode zip file do you have installed and how current are your maps?

Has it ever worked correctly for you?

Have you recently done anything to your TT which may have changed some settings?

EDIT - Just to confirm, do not put a space between the 2 parts of the post code, enter it as one long 6/7 digit code.

Thank you for your reply.

I'm sure that when I first bought the unit it did accept the full postcode - though this is a long time ago and I haven't used that feature until a couple of days ago, when I only had a postcode, not an address. I'm up to date with the maps as I subscribe to the map updater.
I've looked at what's on the memory card but can't find anything obvious that looks like a postcode file. Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place, and it's hidden in another file somewhere.
Finally, I've not done anything to the unit except have Pocket GPS World camera database and custom voice loaded.

I've looked again and found an item within the map folder that is called 'postal_GBR.ttd'. However, there isn't a version number. It only says that it was modified today( because I have just downloaded the latest map update.)
By the way, I installed the PGS World camera database and custom voice a long time ago.

Do this .......

Download this compressed file:
http://www.tomtom.com/updates/zipcodes/Map_885/zip.zip

and use WinRar to extract the contents to a FOLDER called zip (all lower case) in the root of the unit.

Thus, you should find up with a folder called zip AND the contents of the zip file (confusing with the naming, eh?) on the unit.

That is a NEW system to deliver the postcodes to the latest models. All the older models (the ones that use "Home" on the PC for updates) use the "zip" folder method.

dhn is putting you on the right lines.....

But personally, rather than using WinRar, I would do the extraction with Window's own built-in extraction just by right clicking on the downloaded file and selecting "Extract all".
That will save the folder you need onto the PC and you can then COPY it to the TomTom.
Just seems easier to me that way. Smile

I only use WinRar when I have to... for unpacking the ".cab" files used by TomTom sometimes.
For ordinary .zip files Windows own routine works fine.

(For Macs.. they seem to have troubles with their own extraction methods and people do have to use third-pary solutions like Stuffit etc.)

Done all that but still no joy. I now have a couple of files in my map folder that are called Great_Britain.postal and another Great_BritainPostal.ver. Still won't accept full postcodes though. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Those files NEED to go into a FOLDER called zip in the root of the unit, NOT in the map folder as individual files.

Can't find a folder called 'zip'. Where do I look for it?I've looked at everything that shows on the Tom Tom when I connect to my computer. Sorry, I'm not up on these things.

When you "unzipped the download" it should have ended up in a normal folder called zip and you copy the whole thing across, but if not, it doesn't matter... you can just make one.
You can do that by right clicking in the window in Windows Explorer and selecting "New" then "Folder" or by selecting "New" then "Folder" from the File menu at the top. Then put all four files back inside it.

Here's what it should end up looking like in Windows Explorer.
The TomTom will have lots of folders, one of which has to be called "zip" and that folder has the four files inside.
(The other folders will include your UK or Europe map folder and will be somewhat different on a Go500 to what's in my picture)

If you do not have a folder named "zip" you can create one yourself. Once you have plugged your TT in to the computer, opened Windows Explorer and clicked the TomTom icon so you can see the files, right click on the TomTom icon and a sub menu should open and one of the choices should be "create new folder" select this, call the new folder "zip" without the quotation marks. So now the new folder zip shall be added to the root of the TT and you should be able to see this new folder, along with all the other folders when you select the TT icon. It is into this folder that you place the contents of the 885 zip download once you have unzipped/expanded them.

Edit - Doh! wot genesis says above Wink
