There's no use crying over spilt milk; I probably forgot to lock the car. But, last night, the car was emptied of anything of value: emergency petrol cash, binoculars, Chinese sunglasses, the two 1 euro coins I keep for the Calais supermarket trollies and, of course, TomTom.
Almost certainly, I have to change my TomTom passwords and ask TomTom to deactivate anything they can, but I thought I might get a more sensible answer here before I contact TomTom.
What can they deactivate? Live Traffic, presumably, but not the map. And I suppose you can't deactivate your camera database.
The unit contains my email address. What problems is that likely to cause me?
Let me look on the bright side: I can now search your recommendations, choose the best that is available and go to Ebay and buy the latest model.
Grrrr.

PS
I have just loaded TomTom Home and have visited the TomTom site, but there seems to be no way to change a password or report a stolen unit.
Does this mean that I have lost the £47 I paid this week for my annual Live Traffic service?
Does it mean that I should buy some other manufacturer's product as a replacement?
I hope not.

About the best option available to you is to purchase a new TomTom Live device then prior to connecting it to your computer phone the support team up and explain whats happened.
They should be able to transfer the Live account to the new unit (they will probably want to see a copy of the till receipt for the replacement so have a picture of it ready to e-mail to them).
As for deactivating the old unit, they can probably kill the Live part of the device but nothing else, if you fancy taking this course of action the phone number for support is 0845 161 0009 - Mike |

Thank you for the support number, Mike.
I rang it and, within very few seconds / number selections, got through to a live (English) person. Again very quickly, he disabled the Live services on the stolen unit and made it non-upgradeable.
The money I have paid for maps and Live services remains on my account and is no longer associated with the stolen unit.
He then offered me 20% off a replacement GO LIVE 825 Europe, which brought it below the best Ebay price. I bought one.
All in all a successful 15-minute phone call.
As my TomTom log-in and password are stored in the unit, I have changed the password.

Under the unfortunate circumstances, that sounds like a pretty good result. Not that having your stuff nicked in the first place was though |

At least it is worthless to the thief
I take it you did set a pin protection number(To lock it when switched on) and set the unit to automatically power off when the power lead is removed.
It is also worth thinking about registering at www.immobilise.com
This is the site the police use to reunite owners with recovered property, a long shot but it does happen.(Serial numbers of the stolen unit should be on the box if you still have it) |

No, I didn't know about personal PIN number protection or automatic switching off. (It annoyed me that the unit showed a picture of a bridge for quite a long time after I switched it off.)
I shall investigate these when the replacement arrives today. And I shall look into immobilise as you suggest, bazelk.
Oh, well, onwards and upwards.

Yes, I use immobilize too - not needed to call on them so far, but having little stickers and uv markings on pretty well everything of value makes me feel better!
Also, I like to think that the stickers in the car (including on my satnav mount) encourage the opportunist to move on to the next car. _________________ David
