Sorry if this has been discussed already, I'm sure it must have but I've searched and searched.

My Tomtom wired GPS will not aquire its position with my HP4150.

Well it does briefly and then immediately starts searching again.

I've had it searching for 2 hours at a time in the car (stationary) with the gps on the car roof. the little dots go across and 7 or more grey bars come up. Occasionally they go red, it gives the position in black and the compass arrow and then goes off (grey) searching again.

I am now running version 3.02 of GPS.

Incidentally I had no trouble with the Medion set up wich aquired perfectly and quickly and worked with both navtech and TomTom3.

My only guess now is that the unit is defective?

Problem no 2 is writing from PC to my new Memorex 512 sd card but I'll put that in a new thread.

Thanks for a great Forum, Simon

Let's leave the software aside for a moment. Connect the GPS receiver to power, but not to the PDA. Observe the blinking LED. It should blink red and after a while it should blink green.

If it won't blink green after 5 minutes, take the receiver and hold it outside the car. See if it acquires a fix now.

If it doesn't then the receiver is broken.

If it does, take it back inside. Keep looking if it maintains a green blink.

If it doesn't then you have a coated windshield and need to find another place for the receiver.

If it does you may still ahve a coated windscreen, and the receiver is not sensitive enough to obtain a fix, but it is good enough to maintain the fix (doing some guesswork) Not a satisfactory solution - try find a non coated space somewhere in the corner or behind the mirror.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

When I put the GPS on the car roof and switch on the power the led blinks green briefly and the stays continuous green all the time.

The Royaltec wired GPS receiver had no problem in this car (maybe had more power)

Thanks, Simon

yeah, the receiver has some kind of problem. Try a factory reset with the WinFast Navigator tol. If that doesn't help, send it in for a replacement

Tried the factory reset with winfast navigator.

It is connected and all the satellites show up but it will not hold a fix.

I'm taking it back therefore. (To PC World)

Many thanks, Simon

Well I might as well finish the thread. I took the GPS unit back to PcWorld and they swapped it for another (second hand) unit which worked first time. Aquired a fix in about 1 minute so must have already been initialised.

So all is well and to think of all the lost hours sitting in my car waiting for a lock on....!! Confused
