Sorry - yet another 'which one'
New (to me) Audi A4 with no built-in satnav - then discovered virtually impossible (quote for £4k!) to retro-fit an Audi system. So...
Looking for a separate unit. Done lots of research (forums, manfrs websites, PCPro mag etc) and have decided that I want a 5" unit with some sort of live traffic facility.
I've come down to either the Navigon or the TomTom, but have got a little nervous about the current TomTom issues with PC connectivity, map updates and no backup facility.
Could anyone who owns/has considered these two give me the benefit of their knowledge/experience please
Thanks for any help/advice you can give. _________________ Audi A4 2.0TDI (143) SE Exec (CVT)

OK, so went for the Navigon 70 Premium Live (thanks to Zebsogo for informative PMs). Of course I'm also aware thar Garmin are in the process of buying the Navigon business - just hope they've got the sense to leave the good stuff (map styles etc) alone!
Good advice/service from Phil at SatNav Warehouse in Manchester (sorry Mods, am I allowed to mention retailers?).
Only had since Friday, used Friday night with good results. Good clear guidance voice.
Only small(ish) complaints at the moment are having to press screen (resistive) harder than my HTC Desire HD (capacitive) and some illogical responses to trying to input geographical co-ordinates for a POI or destination (sometimes works, sometimes not).
Wishes:
5" Capacitive touch screen (but with anti-reflection coating - not like horrendous TT 1005)
Ability to back-up only POIs/Destinations, Routes etc. before updating maps - then ability to re-instate them afterward onto new maps.

Did you calibrate the screen when you got the Navigon? Mine is quite sensitive most of the time and I've got a screen protection film on it as well. I personally just miss the stylus from the previous models.
What POIs do you mean, Navigon's own which come with the maps, or ones you want to add, such as the safety cameras from here, or caravan club, etc sites?
- the Navigon ones can't, as far as I know, be backed up separately, but you shouldn't need to, as they are maintained by Navigon through system and map changes.
Quote:
ALERT - Navigon have recently released a more comprehensive POI package (discussed in another thread here) which, as a now 'proud' owner of a 70, you can get free, PROVIDED you download them before 30 June
- 'personal' POIs are added using the "MyPOIs" procedure with Navigon's FRESH device management program - see the full user manual (available from their web site). These also will be retained across most system changes, but in any case, you will already have created a folder on your PC with them during this procedure, so you will have your backup there.
You mention destinations (Favourites?) and routes. There is a bit of a problem with these as they are held in Navigon's internal memory and are not user-accessible, so you can't create a backup. This is particularly unfortunate as the periodic system upgrades (not map upgrades) you are virtually forced to implement often DO wipe them out. It is also very irritating for people who have lots of them and have to re-input them all after each upgrade!
Now, there IS a way over this problem, to allow backups to be made, but I hesitate to recommend it to a new user as it involves altering a system file on the device! If you ARE interested in this at any time in the future though, I did include a mention of it in another of the Navigon threads (the '70' one I think).
I hope that this is reasonably clear, but apologies if I've rambled on too much! If you have any other questions, do come back to the forum. _________________ David

Thanks very much for taking the time to give such a comprehensive reply David - much appreciated
Yeah, it was losing destinations/favourites and routes after a system update that really hacked me off! I may take you up on your offer on 'modifying' the system file in a little while.
I did calibrate the screen - but I used a stylus from an old PDA of mine, since the instructions stated "..stylus..". I'll try it again with using my digit gently!
