TomTom Announce GO LIVE 800 Series

Fresh in the wake of the Start 20 Series last week is the latest new model range, the GO LIVE 800 Series.

This new 820 Series model is the LIVE enabled version of the Start 20 with a 4.3" screen whilst the 825 is the LIVE enabled equivalent of the 25 Series with a larger 5" touch screen.

The 800 series shares the same IF product design as the Start 20/25 which means it has the flip screen and integrated mount. The launch signals a move to simplify the TomTom product line-up. There will now be two distinct ranges, the basic Start models and the connected GO LIVE range which add data connectivity.

All GO LIVE 800 series models come bundled with one year of LIVe services which includes HD Traffic, speed cameras, Local Search and Weather. Voice control and Bluetooth hands-free calling also feature.

The TomTom GO LIVE 825 Europe will be available this month with an RRP of £229.99 and the TomTom GO LIVE 820 will be available from September.

I see the 825 Europe is already available from TT website, for £229.99, but you can get £30 off by trading in ANY old satnav.

So the question is.... Why would I get a 1005 for £300, without an SD card slot instead of an 825 for £230, WITH the SD card slot? For the magnetic mount? I see they both have 5" capacitive screen and 4GB internal memory.

Anyway, are you reviewing it? More to the point really, would I like one, bearing in mind I don't want 1xxx for all it's limitations?

Incidentally, I see the 5" screens still have only 480 x 272 pixels - where's the improvement over 4.3"?

Aside from the obvious design differences and the mount, I think this lacks the capacitive touch screen of the GO 100x and the fast planning feature that I've never found to be that fast Wink

4GB internal should surely cope with Europe map updates and SD card slot surely means I can copy it for backups? It says capacitive screen on the 825 specifications.

The MicroSD slot is for a 'future enhancement' so I wouldn't be so sure it will offer the same expandability as we have been used to nor the same ease of access, that would be contrary to the ethos of NAV3.

Interesting regards capacitive screen though. My Start 25 lacks that, another differentiator between Start and GO in the new setup perhaps?

So there I was all ready to go out and splash the cash on a 1005 this weekend, when you post this.

So 825 or 1005, jeez, why do TomTom do this, Laughing Out Loud

. I presume it runs all the same software versions, just a different box and mount.

Hopefully once the review version has been received there will be some comparison, or is there one out there already.

Darren, can you ask them if it is just a renamed VIA Live?! It looks exactly the same specs and design except for the faux-carbon fascia!
