PostPosted: Tue Apr 26, 2011 6:52 pm    Post subject: Which micro sd card? Reply with quote

Finally got fed up with the battery of my 720 dying after 30 seconds without power and am picking up a 750 from Tesco, tomorrow. I was also prompted by wanting to use a remote and it seems the 50's are the last model compatible with the remote and as they are now discontinued.....
From reading various posts it looks like it will be advisable to use a micro sd card for the maps. Is it worth buying a class 6 or even a class 10? If so can anyone recommend a make and where to buy?

thanks

Any 4GB (or higher if you need it) Class 6 MicroSD card will be fine, I wouldn't get a card from e-bay though as there are loads of scam cards on there so you can't trust what you would get, 7 Day Shop or similar should be ok though.

By the way feeding a class 10 speed card in to a TomTom is akin to feed a pig on a diet of Strawberries IMHO - Mike

Out of the ones listed from the e-shop I linked to earlier I would go with the Trancend as they have been known to work well with the TomTom products for some considerable time now see Here £11 for 8GB class 6 incl delivery isn't too bad at all - Mike

Is there any real benefit fitting a Class 10 card? I didn't see any difference between a Class 2 and a Class 4.

Read 4 posts up. I think that you have answered your own question by not seeing any difference between one card and a faster one

Yeah personally I'd go for Class 10 to future proof yourself - never know what you'll use it for in future. Class 10 can be found at not much premium these days look at my first link.

Thanks for the replies. I have found a micro sd card and started a new thread on speeds.

(Moderator edit by AP... You can find Alan's new topic here: How fast is your TomTom?)

The internal memory is just a bunch of chips soldered to the motherboard, and haven't got a "Class" rating as such, because that method of specifying the speed was only brought in for SDHC cards (although I believe it gets used for all SD cards now - see Wikipaedia article here).

But as a rough guess, I'd say it was equivalent to a Class 2-4.

Would you just put the maps on to a class 6 card or all the files?

To start with I would just load the maps to the card, if/ when the internal Flash Memory in the device packs up then you can load everything to the card and the device will continue to work from just the card based storage - Mike
