|
|
I'm still trying to find the time to sort out those rotten maps on the SD card into my TomTom One XL - I will finally report back with progress, but now have another niggle - it's lost a bit of itself.
This bit is shown here :

Second photo down shows the base of the unit - the centre connector is round (takes the RDS jack plug type connection). The photo shows it with the round plastic protector over it - mine has lost said round plastic protector and now all I can see is the raw shiny metal connections. They still work when I plug it in, but are obviously now damagable (if that's a word). Any ideas where I could source a replacement part - maybe someone has one that they are breaking for spares? I've just tried a repair company and been quoted £60 to do the repair and tbh. I could buy a re-con one for £10 less than that on ebay. I just wondered if my pals here could possible help with ideas, suggestions or parts?
Cheers

I can probably take one out of a spare x10 mount, the RDS-TMC connector is the same in that (I have just had both units in bits to check the connectors are the same).
Are you aware this is a surface mounted socket that will require a very fine tipped soldering iro of the correct type for SMT style work, even though its only got seven soldered connections the whole lot is half the size of a postage stamp!
It could be that you have simply lost the small round part that overhangs the PCB but there are two electrical contacts in that tiny part alone, gluing a new connector isn't the answer - Mike |

Cheers Mike
That's a bit of a shame, no wonder the repair cost is so high. Yes, I was just hoping that it would slot in with a bit of ye olde super glue. What I'm looking at is some copper colour wire twists protruding at various depths in the socket.
I don't know if I know anyone with the kit and the skill that could solder the part as you describe - I'll ask my brother, but I don't think he has done anything quite that fine, I know I never have - I'm happy to tin and join thick cables and plugs, but something that fine is beyond me. It's difficult to see how the job could be done from the outside so I'm assuming it's a take the box apart job? _________________ TomTom Live 1005 world maps |

You would have to extract the PCB from the unit to effect the repair - Mike |

Hi,
Sorry to bring up an old topic, I have the same problem on my tom tom, however, I have seen a number of RDS-TMC devices that appear to use the USB port on the bottom (see below).
Will this be compatible with my Tomtom one xl?
thanks

I don't think so... but you have to be very careful about exact model numbers.
Check the relevant pages on the TomTom website.
I think the RDS receiver you show in your picture is THIS ONE
And the "ONE XL" does not appear in the list of compatible models (although all the newer "XL" models do)
However there's THIS ONE which does say it is compatible with the ONE XL.
If you are not sure which exact TomTom model you have, put the first two characters of the serial number on the barcode sticker, into the form HERE. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

The solution is to get hold of TT customer support - I used their online chat. I asked if they could help, said it was my fault and out of warranty and offered to pay for a repair. They said if I wanted to go ahead and send in the unit they let me know possible cost before going ahead with the job, max cost £65. Vs. the concept of £75 for an independant repairer I said I'd go ahead.
Within 24hrs came a special pre-paid special deliivery package to send it through in. Within another 36 hrs the package was back to me, with...........................a brand new unit FOC!!
TT customer support on the basis of that service - truly excellent in every respect. Well done TT _________________ TomTom Live 1005 world maps |

Wow, great result!
In fact that's the second story like that I've heard this week... TT must be getting soft in their old age!
Kudos to them for keeping the customers happy . _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |
