As a new convert to RDS I have come across a little problem that I'm sure you can answer. Should the unit issue a warning when you have received traffic info?. I ask this because unless you keep looking at the screen you have no way of knowing if a new traffic situation as occurred. It happened twice today, I set off and everything was clear but half way down the M11 the traffic came to a stop and that's when I looked and saw the RDS telling me there was a hold up. If I could assign a warning noise to the RDS it would make life a lot easier. It has plenty of warnings for speed and POI's but none I can find for the traffic.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Different devices have different capability. Generally if you have text-to-speech you can get a verbal warning that traffic has changed. If you don't, I assume you could set a sound warning, but not absolutely certain of that.

On my 740 I get a beep if the situation changes. If it is a significant enough change to cause a retold I get a visual message on the screen as well as an audio message. I would check the settings for the TMC with it plugged in.

Also don't forget the unit can only reroute if there is enough warning time and alternative routes in order for the unit to be able to reroute.

On my 520 I regularly get a spoken message saying "The traffic situation has changed. You are still on the fastest route" or "... another route is available which is x minutes faster" or something equivalent.

I don't use text-to-speech, although this message is said in a computer voice rather than the human voice.

I use the Traffic from the Live services so it MIGHT be different for you, but I have a tickbox for "Report if Traffic on Route changes"

This is NOT in "change preferences", but can be accessed by tapping the traffic bar on the main screen and selecting "Traffic Preferences". There's a second page of options after that to define what re-routing is done, if any.

Well today just to see the difference I connected it to my 520, but after waiting two hours for it to connect I gave up. It did look like the 520 did offer a full list of options, voices or sound effects but unfortunately because it couldn't find a signal they were all grayed out. As soon as I put the XL back on it found a signal almost straight away. Try as I might I cannot find any screens that offer any audible warnings, guess it's something TT will have to come up with.

I think I might contact TT and see if they can offer me a solution, might be worth a try.

Right... so it's an XL we're dealing with.

I have an XL Live and get the warning.

So if you tap the traffic bar, what menu options do you get?
Amongst others I get "Traffic Preferences" and the first setting if you tap on that is "Report if traffic on route changes". Te second setting is "Replanning preferences" or what to do if traffic situation changes" always switch/ask/never change route.

If it works with the XL then it is the usb connector, which will only work with version 8.351 software and above.

Well I have had a look the options and I think you have covered them all, In traffic preferences you only get "Report if traffic on route changes" or "Tune manually" if you select the first one it goes onto the normal "Ask/Always/Never" and thats it. There is no option to set any warnings, the only audible warning I get, is if I'm already on a congested route and a better one is found, It will bleep and ask if I want to take the new route.
As for the 520 it is on 8.351, I looked on TT web site and on there FAQ's page and there was a section for unit's "Looking for traffic signal" it said I should check the memory for faults (which I did) but not what to do if there weren't any. So I'm back to square one with that one.

If you have a computer voice selected, you can go into voice preferences/speech preferences and tick 'Read aloud traffic warnings'.
