Hey guys. I purchased a TomTom Go 550 yesterday as a replacement for my broken TomTom XL ...

I have added POI's from PGPSW's database within the "United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland" map folder as you would do and now my TomTom goes into an infinite boot loop.

Connecting it via HOME and operating it via HOME works fine...

After deleting all the new POI's I added...the TomTom boots up fine... wy is this happening?

Quote:
Special Note to i3 users: DO NOT TRY TO INSTALL MORE THAN 85 POI CATEGORIES AS THIS WILL CAUSE YOUR UNIT TO FAIL TO BOOT!

I did tick many POI boxes to download...could this be the reason why?

Secondly, the TomTom is only recognising some of the custom POI's I added (I checked when I was operating the device via HOME)... for example it starts at the letter C - Z instead of A-Z ... so Burger King is missing but when you search it, it's there....

why is that happening?

Thirdly.. I puchased a TomTom go 500 but according to http://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9508 I have a GO 750 LIVE - 2GB ... how does that work?
My internal memory is 1.86GB (so 2GB) ..but the 550 should have 1GB right?
I look forward to reading your replies.

How many custom POI categories have you installed, count up the number of files with an extension of .ov2

The Go-550 does indeed have a custom POI limit it is currently 256 individual categories, each category can contain thousands of locations.

The Go-550 and Go-750 hardware are identical, only the mao supplied with the device when purchased new is different:

550 is regional i.e. UK&ROI
750 is Western Europe

One option is to combine the subcategories of the POI files, for example when I want cash from an ATM I have no real need to know which bank, the same applies to Fuel, by ammalgamating the files in to single larger ones reduces the total number of categories but maintains the individual locations.

Another option is to use POIEdit to concatenate two or more POI files in to a single file, again the aim being to maintain the location data but reduce the number of categories - Mike

As Mike says, it sounds like you could easily merge some of those POI categories together!
Or have you really got 381 completely separate fields of interest? Shocked

It's worth mentioning that for POIs downloaded from this site, it does make a difference to the names you see on screen if you a} use the "Combine categories" feature as you download them or b}you use a program like POI edit to combine them together afterwards.....

For example:
If you wanted a category for "Electrical Shops" (like Comet, Currys Maplins etc. then merging the individual company files together as you download is good, as it puts the company name at the front of each entry when you search for them.

But if you wanted to combine together "Pubs" and "Dining pubs" then merging them together as you download puts "Pub" at the front of every single entry (which you don't want!).

To get round it you can use a combination of the two techniques, so for the pubs example I used above, what I do is this:

First download the 'Pub' category on it's own (i.e. SEPARATE)
Then, download 'Dining Pub' plus 'Wetherspoons' and any other pub types s you want, COMBINED.
Then use POI Edit to merge the two files together (and I then use the "Dining pubs" icon for the whole category, just because I think it looks nicer Rolling Eyes ).

In general:
If you need to get the name at the front of the entries for something,
download it PLUS (and here's the sneaky bit) any other category with as few entries as possible, and download those combined.
