Hi, I have been researching GPS units for a few weeks now. I have found that SirfStarIII and MTK are almost equivalent, MTK is sometimes reported to have lower power consumption, is this right?

Basically, I am a photographer and would like to geo-tag my photos. I realise that I will probably have to buy software to sync my GPS data to the photos but that is ok. I will be traveling by foot, bicycle and in the car. I am looking for just a GPS receiver as I do not need a screen or any maps. I just want to track where I have been. I would quite like it to have a good fix with the satellites as I may well be hiking through the forest. I would also like it to work in a house - do any GPS receivers come with a gyro so they can estimate where you are if they loose signal?

Your help is much appreciated.

Thank you

I doubt if any hand held ones do, because you need to know speed and direction to dead recon your position. A gyro will give direction but not speed. The ones that do "dead reckon" either assume current speed and direction to be at the last known values, which gives rather poor results, or have a speed input from, say, the car's speedo, and a yaw rate gyroscope input for change in direction. (as fitted to some Honda cars, and no doubt others)

Ok, so not including the gyro, what would a suitable unit be?

I forgot to mention that I take RAW photos so if it cam with software it would be great if it was compatible with them.

Also, I would prefer something that just records everywhere you go so you can upload your whole route to google maps or something (opposed to push to log).

Cheers

Have a look at This Review for a decent bit of kit but I am not too sure if RAW format will let you post process to add Geo-Tagged data to a picture - Mike

I have a Skytraq Venus 6 which does photo tagging and overlays google maps seamlessly and also exports data, it is a Bluetooth Keyring unit with a USB connection also, 10hr rechargable batttey life and the route logging can be set at different time i.e. shorter the time more accurate your route on google map, also has a button on front to drop a marker on route, I paid about £28 on Fleabay so cheap enough to play with, will look for data sheet as only have jpg on computer which i can send if you want to pm me your addy.
is this any help?

To be honest I havent used it to a great extent, but i just left it in my pocket or on dash plugged in to cigar lighter to maintain charge and had no problems with signals, it just does as it says on tin, havent used photo tagging so cant comment on that. settings are done via usb cable , if time too long it jumps across corners i.e point to point, settings include monitoring above certain speed i,e, stopped no logging, and shows speed and altitude via graphic strip, basicly very simple to use, will look further to find info and source. may take while because hospital visiting at moment.

Have you considered using a cell phone and some tracking software. Theres lots of options, and I bet you carry a phone with you anyway. Only issue I know of is the battery life with GPS on is low due small batteries to keep the phones small. This is easily overcome with a spare battery (or two), a charging cable in the car or an external battery.
