i have just tried to update my TT940 via TT Home (for Mac) and when I restart the TT I get
"Problem with map
You cannot use this map on this device:
Western_and_Central_Europe-161"

This is the only map I have on the device so I can't even get to the home screen. Is my only recourse to restore my original backup of the TT files - and do I do this by simply copying back all files from my backup.
I have done the update twice and it failed each time, my fear is that it will also fail after I have restored, and I won't even have a reasonably recent version of the software.

Before you resort to restoring a backup, try the "ClearFlash" utility from TomTom (downloadable from HERE. That often helps with various map activation problems.

If you do need to restore a backup and you haven't done it before, can I suggest you make ANOTHER one first (using the instructions in our FAQs at the top of this forum section).
Once you've done that, assuming you made your backup in the same way (i.e. using Windows Explorer or Mac Finder) you do as you said... delete everything on the TomTom and copy/paste all the files from your backup onto it instead.

If you used Home to make the backup, you'll need to use Home to put it back.

Good luck!

Why do TomTom make everything so difficult. The only reason I was updating in the first place was because they broke the last update such that I haven't had HD Traffic for 3 months (despite paying for it). Now I don't even have a map.

I tried clearflash, but it's a pretty dreadful Mac program. Wasn't clear whether it had completed successfully, gave no way of exiting the program without crashing it, so I ended up with an error that I had disconnected my device without ejecting it. It appeared to do nothing, but it also wasn't at all clear whether it actually ran anything.
So I will resort to restoring my backup, trouble is I am away from home and don't have my backup to hand.
Sometimes I think TT is more trouble than it is worth.

I run a mac too, and clearflash is problematic. It does not install as you'd expect and you have to fudge around trying to find how to get it to interact with your device. So far I'm still trying.

It gives lousy feedback (actually, none) but the act of installing Clear Flash while the unit is connected actually results in CF doing its thing.

I have now backed up my TT and restored the original files. Now when I start it up I get a picture of an SD card with a cross through it.
It might be because I formatted it before I restored the files. (the Mac has this silly feature that you can't selectively delete individual files from the trash can, and as I didn't want to empty the trash for my whole system I formatted the TT).

Delete the loose files in the root of the device, do not touch any folders or files within folders. Next let Home download and install a new copy of the Navcore software - Mike

Home won't run, it just says "an error has occurred".

Remove Home from the computer and download a fresh copy, once its back on the computer it should be OK.

There is another way to download and install the latest Navcore to the unit but I tend to use WinRar for extracting the files to the device from the PC and I am not too sure if there is a MAC version of that software - Mike

My understanding is that Stuffit for the Mac does what WinRar does for a PC.

I have now downloaded and installed everything again, but when I start up the 940 I still only see a picture of the device with an SD card with a red cross through it.

I'll admit I haven't looked back through the entire topic, but have you tried using a different SD card, and NOT formatting it on the Mac before use?
