Well Its Been Years,

From TomTom on the Early XDA and PDA Devices, thru the original Go's and 910, 930 940 (I started to learn they never caught me out with the 950!)

Anyway after all these years I am moving on, WHY

Well I purchased a Dell Streak Mobile Phone, and to my shock I find that on its great 5" Widescreen (Yes 5" on a phone!) I can run Google Nav with decent TTS Voice, Free Traffic, Loads of Map Displays, constantly updated maps, and how much does cost. Nada, Zilch, Zip!! Well I am starting to think I have had mug written on my forehead these past years,

Paying £££ for flaky devices and constant poor quality map updates and unreliable traffic,

OK the maps are not stored on the device and rely on a data connection to download them (Thats OK my GiffGaff PAYG Sim gives True Unlimited 3G Data)

So for now I am dumping the tomtom and immersing myself in the Free, who says where it will lead, but it does mean TomTom will not be sucking the best part of £200 a year out of my bank account!

One less device to carry around, No More Subscriptions

GiifGaff PAYG £10 a Month Topup Gives

100Mins to any network, True Unlimited Texts, True Unlimited Data, Unlimited Calls to Other GiffGaff numbers and Free 0800 Calls.

(Giffgaff is a fully owned susiduary of o2 - so why is o2 screwing its own customers by cutting unlimited data but offering this alternative?)

PS

GiffGaff are "a fully independent company but we are part of the overall Telefonica O2 family, and we run our service on the O2 network."

not the same as being owned and run by O2.

So the if maps aren't stored on the device & it relies on a data connection to download the maps, what happens when you go out of the O2 service area?

Oh! Of course you'll have no maps to navigate by!!! Rolling Eyes

Mmm, sat nav with maps installed or phone with sat nav, but without maps installed, it strikes me the choice is clear.

A sat nav with maps is a clear winner.

It also reads "Fully Owned & Financed by O2" Hence Its O2 under a different name.

Hence the Advert on O2 website for Giffgaff Staff!

It downloads and stores the entire Google Maps route in advance, it just overlays the Satellite photo images as you drive. So yes you still have maps to drive by,

Over 3000 miles on it so far and lost O2 service for about 20 miles, even 2G service is quick enough to download the images.

If you're so concerned about TT's reliability & mapping record, why not switch to something which uses Navteq maps, like Garmin?

Ah, i got confused. I thought you meant a £10 /month top up. I guess you are actually referring to the £10 goody bag?
