Hi, I am new to the forum but am a regular visitor to the Pocket GPS web-site. I live oversees and am due to visit the UK next month for about 4 weeks to visit the family and as such will be doing a lot of driving.
I already own an IPAQ 3970 and an SysOnChip CF+ GPS but I am looking for some advise on what mapping software to use during my trip.
As I already have a UK driving license, so I am interested in a mapping system that can intergrate with the POI for speed cameras etc (to avoid the points & fines) but i am also looking at the more cost effective end (ie cheaper than TomTom 3) of the mapping market.
Any suggestions or experiences that would help would be appreciated |

Hi Afinbk,
to the forum.
Mapopolis allows you to download data for a trial of 9 days. So you can try before you buy, and you would need to buy as you’re going to the UK for longer than the demo period. If you’re doing driving around a small area then Mapopolis may be OK as you can buy the data in “county” blocks.
Unfortunately TomTom Navigator has the best choice of third party add-ons. You don’t say which country you live over seas in. If your base country has TTNav3 coverage then you may want to buy the one for your country for further use and then the European data to include the UK.
As for the points and fines, if you have a foreign driving license in addition to your UK one, then you may want to try driving on that. If you are caught, then the normal procedure is that the registered owner of the car will be notified by post. They will say that you were driving that day and ask the authorities to contact you directly. This may or may not work but if you do get caught it may be worth a try.

Thanks for the reply. I am living in Thailand, so no coverage by TT3. Will check out the mapopolis software for the free trial and the TT3 for the 3rd party. Not sure that i can get away with the non-UK driving license but worth a try.
Thanks again |
