|
|
I bought a traffic receiver and have set it up as instructed but do not get a "traffic bar" on the right side of the screen. Read the instructions about enabling it from the preferences menu but don't seem to be able to find that option.
Is it that with the option of the subscription Live HD traffic info this model is not compatible with the external RDS-TCM module or am I being a bit dim ?
Wrong age for electronic gizmos!
All help appreciated.

As far as I know only the x40/ x50 mount with the integral RDS receiver built in to the mount will work with the x50 range of devices, any of the plug in receivers simply don't work - Mike |

I read a lot of these posts mentioning x40 / X50 etc? What does this nerdy jargon mean? |

It means any device in the series which ends in 40 or 50, i.e. 540, 740, 940, 550, 750 and 950. x is commonly used to represent a variable or unknown number. _________________ Anita

x40/ x50 relates to the familiy of devices released by TomTom with very similar appearance and hardware specifications:
540 UK&ROI Maps
740 Western European Maps
940 Western European Maps, North American Maps, FM Tx, EPT
550 UK&ROI Maps
750 Western European Maps
950 Western European Maps, North American Maps, EPT
I hope this explains the "nerdy jagon" very little between the device specifications other than additional memory to house the larger map content with the exception of the 940 which was the last fully featured device TomTom have produced - Mike |

Thanks Mike. Sorry to be off topic but just one final question...what family do the XL LIVE IQ etc belong to? |

The obvious answer is the "XL" family.
In general terms the "x40/x50 descriptions are specific for a certain model range of "Go", but The various "ONE's" and "XL's" need more careful naming to ensure we are all talking about the same thing.
The TomTom range began with the original "Go" model - now often called the Classic
Then there were the Go 300, 500 and 700 models - we call them x00 models
Then there were Go 510, 710, 910 - x10 models
Then the Go x20,x30,x40 and x50 ranges as Anita and Mike explained.
At some point, TomTom decided to make a cheaper product, and that was called the "ONE". This was a return to the smaller screen size than all the current "Go" models.
There were several relaunches of that, all with very similar and confusing names and we often call them the ONE v1, v2, v3 etc - but this is not always a reliable way to tell which one you are talking about as many retailers used different v numbers as does TomTom's "Home" program, as do TomTom them selves!
One offspring of the ONE project was the "ONE XL" which was - surprisingly for the "low budget range" a widescreen model again.
Eventually, they brought out different versions of that and -confusingly again - just dropped the "ONE" part of the name and called it the "XL".
The public loved it, especially when the versions with IQ Routing, then LIVE services and then TTS voices were released, but TT realised it was getting too close to the features and quality of the more expensive "Go" models, so we have now seen the launch of the "Version 2" of the XL which is a "dumbed-down" version of the old one that actually does less than the original.
So whether there is still one XL 'family' or two now is open to argument. |

Lol. Thanks Andy for the explanation. Most companies these days seem to have realised the public want a simple clear product range (banks have learned that lesson in recent years). What a complete mess from TomTom. |
