TomTom on a Laptop

Is there a version of the TomTom software that will run on a laptop?

TomTom home will be able to emulate the device,
however I dont think there are any of the actual navcores or navigators which will work as GPS software on a laptop ( unless the laptops running a Windows Mobile OS perhaps?)

Tomtom runs programmes for Tomtom devices and I think they still run ones for PDAs. I don’t think they have ever bothered with Laptops. Anyway, a Laptop wouldn't be a very practical device to use whilst driving.

You could get a PDA emulator application loaded to the Laptop and then try installing the PDA software to the emulator, probably won't work and you will have issues with map activation I would expect - Mike

There was a Microsoft Emulator a few years back that ran TTn5 with a little bit of juggling, never tried with a GPS reciever tho, but it seems a waste of time when Autoroute will do the job easily if thats what you want.

I thought entertainment systems visible by the driver whilst driving were illegal?

I can use my laptop for navigation but it would be too tricky whilst driving as I do not have a dashbaord mount, a touch screen and a keyboard/mouse would be out of the question.

If installed correctly they are fine, mine can be used for music, radio, GPS, Handsfree while driving:



If I select reverse I get a real time moving image from the rear view camera located on the tailgate of the car. Finally assuming the handbrake is applied OR the car is in Park (its an automatic) I can watch movies stored on DVD, CD, USB memory stick or memory card but its certainly not illegal if installed correctly, it uses a touch screen negating the need for a mouse or keyboard. To shift from my Win CE based device to a full Windows OS running on a PC wouldn't be very difficult and there are plenty of people that have done this - Mike

My main reason for asking was to be able to access some good motoring maps on my laptop rather than use it for navigation.

In the UK this is not a problem a I use the application Memory Map which can access the normal type of road maps and the OS 1:50,000 maps. It can also be used to access the OS Route Planner and the OS StreetView maps which can now be downloaded and used free of charge.

The problem comes when I want similar maps of Europe. I can use Google Maps and TomTom's own Route Planner maps but I need to be near a WiFi hotspot to do this. Any other form of mobile access to the internet is far too expensive.

Memory map also covers much of Europe for road planner detail and also in some countries offers down to 1:25000 but will work out expensive for all of Europe at high detail.

MS Autoroute covers a lot of Europe down to street detail, has route planning and navigation.
