Can someone advise me, from the following preferences, which GPS would suit me best. I have a Mio 268 which I love but can't get map updates for, so I bought a Moov 400 which I hate.

I Must have:-
The ability to completely avoid motorways (Not the silly preference slider which STILL takes me on motorways)

The option of 2D mapping

Place names identified on the map as you pass through them

I Don't need:-
Speed camera alerts
Radio/TV/Bluetooth/Microwave oven/Video conferencing

I would like:-
Variable zoom (Which, on my 268, zoomed further out the faster you went)

The ability to enter a full UK postcode

Am I too choosy?

Any TomTom or Garmin?

I don't know Garmins well, but everyTomTom can avoid motorways, show 2d maps, zoom in and out, navigate to full UK postcodes.
Most place names will show on the map at some point as youpass them, but if you need more detail, the "where am I" function gives a full description of your current position (in a verbose format like you would speak it over the phone to someone)

from that i would say you are after a 'basic' or 'entry level' device.

on the garmin side of things i would look at the 2x5 range (i.e. 205, 215, 255, 265, 275) depending on which features / mapping you would use.

a bit more info on garmins site here: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134
