Hello All,

I have an iPAQ 214

and a GPSlim236 wireles reciever which uses SiRF Star III technology.

I am simply wanting to be able to look at my pda and read of my os grid reference wherever i am.

The GPSlim came with a GPS viewer program, this however only shows longitude and latitude and i am not comfertable with converting this into OS.

Is there a free application i can download in order for me to be able to read as a simple 6 figure grid reference on my PDA screen?

Thank you

Have a look at GPS Speed Sentry, there is a free to use demo version but the application isn't very expensive at all and it offers loads of different options - see Here - Mike

Why not just note the Lat & Lon and convert them later?

by boss feels that the conversion may not be as accurate as we need it to be.

sureley there must be something as simple as a program which shows your coordinates?!

So your boss wants the BEST, but doesn't want to pay for it? Sounds like some bosses I've worked for in the past!

Maybe it's because conversion to OS grid is not actually that simple?

Anyway, every satnav is based around using Lat/Long co-ordinates; so any application will do a conversion somehow, there's no real difference between the sat nav doing it, or you doing it on your pc later.

If that's not good enough for your boss, and he doesn't want to pay to do it properly, I don't know what else to suggest....

The application I first mentioned is only $11 yes eleven US Dollars so probably under £8 when converted which is not much in this day and age - Mike

But surely 6 fig NGR only locates you to a 100m square Shocked . Not very accurate at all when compared to a gps latlon converted to NGR. How accurate does he want what he is not prepared to pay for?

sorry, i meant 6 for both easting and northing, so 12 figure reference.

a few quid isnt the issue, if we pay for a program through the company, the program has to be vetted and tested, thus all the hoops that need jumping, so it was much easier to have something free bypassing the IT services.

all is well anyway, i have found a program which we already use which has the ability to bring up location.

disappointed with this forum!

Well, I for one am MORE than a bit disappointed with your extremely churlish response to genuine attepts to help.

If you do want any more advice, how about this? You might like to tell your company that if they feel it necessary to test paid-for applications then they should be extra careful with freebies - FAR more risky.

Anyway nice meeting you Rolling Eyes Presumably we won't be hearing from you any more? Laughing

And he left without even letting us know what program he is going to use so that we may be better informed to help somebody else out in the future.

The programme is only accessible by staff and clients so is not publicly available.

I was pleased with the responses made (as seen by my thanks) yet dissappointed that the apparent world site for pocket gps cannot help locate a simple program, as a result, you probably presume correctly.

And yes I know the drawbacks of freeware, but for a one off small job it was deemed the best and quickest option in order to deliver the project on time.

apologies for any offence

I have been known to create applications to run on the PDA platform for free in the past, but to be honest I only do this for someone requiring a bespoke application for hobby related use, I certainly wouldn't bother spending time creating something for someone else to use to make money - Mike

Don't blame you! I wouldn't either Smile damned capitalism and globalisation and just-about-holding-down-a-job-by-trying-to-do-it-efficiently-to-pay-the-bills.

And thanks for your quick response, its nice to know that you won't do something that I didn't ask you to do...

Much appreciated.
