Mapsource maps

I've got a Garmin emap, which I use with the Metrosource maps for Europe (V6.14.1).
I'm going to Australia later in the year and it would be useful to at least have a road map to use. Is there anyway I can get this info in a compatible format? I've looked on the Garmin site, and it doesn't even acknowledge that the emap exists.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the garmin website doesn't list the emap as a compatible device (although I expect it is), and also, the world map doesn't give more than "major highways" so is maybe not much better than the basemap aready on the device. OK - just found an example of level of detail, which is better than the basemaps. Does anyone have any experience of this on an emap?

Have you got Mapsource on your PC?

If so, there are various free maps available that you could download to PC and try transferring to your device.

That is brilliant Dales - just what I wanted! Really easy to installed and works with my mapsource just the same as my European maps.

No more easy ones that I know of - perhaps others can advise.

Maps for most other countries are available, although they require an extra degree of effort to install. (You need some trial and error, as some of them seem to work in mapsource and not on the device, or vice versa).

You can find sources for these maps from here or from here, for example.

[EDIT - the following paragraphs assume you have an SD card in the device. If not, just ignore references to the card, and load the maps into mapsource and download to device from there].
If the maps are in .img format, you can copy them straight to your device's SD card, in the Garmin folder (alongside the POIs folder if you have one). The device will only read one at one time of the maps on the SD card, which must be called gmapsupp.img So you may have a bit of file renaming to do.

If you want to merge several maps, to avoid this SD card file limitation, you need to have them on the PC in mapsource. You can do this, with a little effort. You need some freeware:- MapSetToolKit with cGPSmapper and/or GMapTool. There's plenty of tutorial available on how to do this - just google for it.

With all maps now in mapsource on PC, combine them in one mapset and transfer to SD card via a card reader.
