has anyone done this yet
i have just purchased a new 1700mAh replacement and have had a peak inside the p550 to see how hard it is to change.
it looks harder than i thought as the connector doesn't look to easy to get at,
it almost looks like the rest of the back of the unit has to come off, which i'm reluctant to do. of course when the new battery arrives it might all become clear as i can get a look at the new connector.
any help gratefully received !!! |

Hi lofric,
Have been thinking of doing this myself but been waiting on someone reporting how easy it is and how much better the hi-cap battery is. Sorry I can't be of any assistance but would really appreciate if you were to post your findings back here.
Good luck! |

Why do you have to replace the battery?
It cannot be more than 2-3 months old? _________________ Pc-Mobile

i'm a serial fiddle'r (SP). i have to play with the things i buy, make them better, have them apart etc.
also the originals only 1250mAh and it does'nt seem to last very long at all.
i use my pda with memory map while out in the countryside. i do use a battery extender and they work really well. |

ok it wasn't as hard as i thought it would be, the biggest problem was getting the old battery out. mitac stick it in with double sided tape. jesus it was
sticky, it sounded like the pda was going to break! i stupidly levered it up with a screwdriver and marked the case.( there goes my warranty ).
the connector was easy to remove and the new battery went in a dream.
was it worth it ? not sure really, the new 1700mAh battery definately lasts longer but not a hell of a lot. tom tom does kill the battery though & i haven't
tried it with memory map yet. i haven't had to recharge it as often which is a good thing.
would i do i again? probably because thats the way i am. but if you're a bit squeemish about breaking things i'd think twice or at least wait until your old batterys had its day, at least then you'll have no choice. if they wern't stuck down it would be an absolute piece of cake. |

Maybe several minutes with a hairdryer blowing gently on it would have helped a bit. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

maybe, but its well hidden under the battery, & i dont think iv'e come across sticky tape quite so strong!, i reckon it would hold a car battery in place. |

Joking aside, using a heat gun to do this will probably do irreparable damage to the device, for a start the screen doesn't like high temperatures and some heat will get through to the front.
Heating up a modern LiPo type battery is also not a good idea, if it decides to let go you will loose the kitchen table as well as the PDA.
I appreciate the but there are some that might read this and actually try it - if nothing else the case probably wont re-fit the device once you have melted it! - Mike |

I never thought of that Mike. Can you somehow delete my remarks? _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

The excercise in order to make it last longer (not that much) is not worth it IMO. After all it does not really matter even if the battery is worn out if all you use is for navigation in car. _________________ Pc-Mobile

agreed pc-mobile. now if they came up with a 2500mAh battery that would be a different matter.
i have now had a chance to use it with memory map and it lasted at least an hour longer before the battery warning came up. this was my princible reason for changing the battery. |

One other idea for longer battery duration is to use an external charger pack, THESE devices pack quite a bit of power 3600mAh, but they are quite light, there is a newer (larger) capacity pack due out soon that allows you to have 5400mAh available, but I am not too sure about the weight.
The 3600 unit is great for charging anything from the PDA, GPS etc. Mike |
