|
|
Hello all. Can anyone give me advice about the safety camera updates offered by TomTom HOME?
I have a GO LIVE 950 device with Europe and North America 2GB maps.
In TomTom HOME updates I am being repeatedly offered the "Safety Cameras - USA, CAN - Free of Charge" update, version 4254.
If I download and install this update, I get no error messages and it appears to download and install correctly. However the next time I check for updates the same version is offered again.
Now if in HOME I go to "Manage my GO" and check the safety camera items on my device, under "Safety Cameras" I see "Safety Cameras - USA, CAN - Free of Charge" listed twice. The older version is 4167 and is installed correctly in the North_America_2GB map directory on the device. However the newer 4254 version has been installed in the Europe map directory for some reason.
I tried (using manage my go) removing this 4254 version from my device and from the computer, and redownloading using the update service. Each time it gets placed in the Europe map instead of North America. I think the fact it is being installed into the wrong directory is making it repeatedly appear in the updates list.
What controls where this safety camera update is placed? How can I ensure it is placed in the correct map?
All the other safety camera updates seem to go in the correct Europe map.
I did have a similar issue where the Premium Safety Cameras DE version 4257 had installed to the North America map, however removing and redownloading seemed to fix it. |

Just a thought...
Try switching to the US map before connecting the Go to Home?
Alternatively, just use Win Explorer to move the camera files from one map folder to the other (they're pretty easy to identify).
Don't forget to complain to TomTom as well! |

Thanks for your quick reply. That did the trick thankyou!
Yes I complained to TomTom! ie if HOME is going to recommend an update, then surely it could put it in the correct place on my device without me having to worry about not having the correct map selected on my device first! |

Ok that seems to just part of the story.
I've still noticed some problems so have posted this to TomTom support:
Regarding Safety Camera Updates and which map folders they get installed in.
At first I though it might depend on the current map, but apparently not:
In TomTom Home, Update My GO, I have the following updates offered:
Premium Safety Cam UK (version 4261)
Safety Cameras UK TomTom (version 4243)
If I download and install both to my GO 950 then check the device directories,
Safety Cameras UK actually gets written to the North_America_2GB directory
(not Europe).
Premium Safety Cam UK gets written correctly to the Europe directory.
However if I check in "Manage My GO" to see what is on the device, it reports
both as being installed in the Europe directory.
If I disconnect the device, restart HOME and reconnect, it then reports
Safety Cameras UK as being in the North_America_2GB.
Now if I remove Safety Cameras UK using "Manage My GO", it gets deleted from
the North_America_2GB directory. Then if I try to reinstall it from "Add Traffic,
Voices, Safety Cameras etc" (ie the downloaded version) it now gets written
to both map directories. Removing it again also removes from both directories.
My question is, obviously something isn't quite right about this. Should I expect
these files to be written to both directories or just the ones they are
intended for (ie Europe) only?
I've had a similar issue with the Safety Cameras - USA, CAN - Free of Charge
update, where it gets installed to only the Europe directory, and therefore gets
offered again on each update.
In summary some safety camera updates appear get installed to the wrong map
when installed from "Update My GO". I can then uninstall and reinstall using
"Add Traffic, Voices, Safety Cameras etc" which then installs to both maps.
What defines where these updates get installed? |

looking forward to hearing their answer!
Home seems to delight in making a complete pig's ear of what surely can't be a terribly difficult job. |

Got this reply:

Thanks for your email. I have checked this out for you and you need not install the Safety Cameras UK TomTom, they are not part of the live services.
The cameras you need to install are the Premium Safety Cam UK. This is why they are not working correctly, however you can just choose not install them.
We know that these are being offered by home at times but you do not need to install them or worry about where they install.
Also there file size is extremely small and so it should not use up too much space in your device if they do go in the wrong map folder.
If you have Live Services and Premium Safety Cameras installed these are the ones device will use.

I've asked for a bit more clarification as to whether it really doesn't matter which map directory the POI files are placed in. Anyone else know?!! |

Hi, as it didn't cause a problem I didn't mention it before.
I've noticed that TT cameras get installed to BOTH map folders on my 940, although not the full set to North America. Listed below is the current situation after an update last night but uploaded to my unit this morning (Fell asleep!)
Cameras in W&CE map with last modified date:
24/10 - DE / NL / UK
27/12 - AT / BE / CZ / ES / FI / NO / PL / PT / SE
31/12 - DE Premium / FR Premium / NL Premium / UK Premium
Cameras in NA map with last modified date:
06/11 - UK
27/12 - CZ / DE / FR / NL / PL
31/12 - DE Premium / UK Premium
I don't know whether this clarifies things or makes it more confusing! _________________ Mike

Cheers
I've asked TomTom for clarification that if I have Europe map selected then it will ONLY use POI files in the Europe directory. |

The TT will certainly only USE the POI files it finds in the currently selected map's directory/folder.
I think their beautifully vague reply is all the answer you need... Home makes a pig's ear of things, but in this case it doesn't really matter! |
