I just got the Medion GPS bundle from ALDI this morning and compared to my IPAQ2210 the Medion unit is flimsy. I'm new to GPS so I may sound stupid, but do I need another lead to plug the GPS mouse and ciggy lighter into the IPAQ as I'd rather use the IPAQ and flog the Medion unit. I thought the serial lead would be compatible but I'm getting no GPS signal - unless of course I'm doing something stupid!

Don't try to use the Medion Cable with the iPAQ. Best case it just doesn't work (because of different pin assignments), worst case you fry your iPAQ (just imagine Medion has +5V where the iPAQ has Ground). You will need the iPAQ cable, or you will need to rewire the connector.

Many thanks for the advice.
Can anyone recommend the best place to get an ipaq 2220 serial cable from (in the UK) which will work with the Medion Navigator s/w.

As I understand it, the power pins are the same between the Medion and the iPAQ - but the serial pins are not, hence the result you saw. That said, it's really not a good idea to use cables for a different model of Pocket PC even if the connectors are the same.

I'm really a bit surprised that there are two versions (I think it's iPAQ and everything else - but there may be more than two variants) of the 22 pin connector, as the iPAQ wiring was available first. I don't see why other manufacturers didn't just copy it.

I think the rest of your plan is doomed to failure, because I'm pretty sure that the Medion version of the Navigon software contains a software lock that means it only works on the Medion Pocket PCs. I think you may be able to get a version that works on other Pocket PCs by buying some kind of upgrade from Navigon, but I'm not at all sure over this.

I have just ordered a cable for the ipaq - I believe the gps mouse is a re-badged royaltek (who sell different leads for all brands of pda's). I will post my findings when it's delivered.

The cable was delivered, but they sent me a USB cable not a serial one!
I have been assured that the correct cable will be sent to me.
I'll send an update when it arrives.

The correct cable was delivered this morning and works great!
For anyone that wants to use the ALDI GPS with their own PDA then visit http://www.totalpda.co.uk who sold me this cable.
Anyone wanna buy a Medion PDA (without the GPS receiver and s/w)?
