Seen quite a few devices advertised as "sealed/new" & others as "sealed/refurbed" but is there any way of spotting the difference on the box like a label saying "Factory refurbed" cos I don't want to buy a "new" only to find it is, in fact, a factory refurbed.

Not on the box AFAIK, but they certainly USED to put a "R" at the end of the serial number (device code) for refurbished devices.

Having said that, the refurbished units are a great deal... you usually would not know them from a new one, they look immaculate!

What's more, there is a rumour around here that the refurbs are actually more trustworthy than some originals. The refurbs get refurbed and properly tested, unlike our opinion of some of the brand new units!

However (certainly in NA), refurbs do not come with the LMG and, as well, just a 6-month warranty.

Although you knew it was a refurb, was there anything on the box or an "R" at the end of the serial number to actually show it was?

I have bought 2 refurb's, both while i was in the USA.

The first which was over a year ago was in the normal TT box, but with a sticker on the box informing me it was a factory refurb (easily peeled off). No markings on the 720 and no R on the serial.

The later one, a 920 came in a white packaged box which was a TT box but was printed with something like "road tested" on it, so you knew it was a refurb. Again no markings on the unit.

Both have worked faultlessly and looked brand new when opened.

There should be a sticker on the box to say its refurb.

Originally the the refurbs were coming in their original box but this has now switched to a white box.

There no other way to tell them apart as the serial number of the unit stays the same. Tomtom will know from the serial if its been refurbed.

You're more likely to get a problem caused by tomtom home that you are to get faulty hardware.
